I broke into my own car
I broke into my own car
So leave it to my wife to lock the keys in the car. It's an 06 base model with only one key. I was quite pissed, but immediately came here for suggestions. The search brought up few main solutions.
The first is a AAA or other Roadside service type. We do have this through our insurance company.
The second was towing to the dealer.... really only necessary if I had lost the keys. I could see them sitting on the seat.
Third suggestion had to do with a blood pressure cuff and hanger. Fortunately we had just such a thing. However, it was broken.... ARGH.
I'm writing this to show how I did it. Follow at your own risk.
So I set out with two of white metal hangers from my dry cleaned shirts. I snipped off the top and the twisty parts. I straightened them out some. I curled the end of the sharp wire to push through the rubber seals w/o puncturing them. It also worked as a 'hook' to pull the lock open. I had two hangers, but really only needed one.
I found some duct tape to protect the paint.
I started out at the top right corner of the drivers door. A large flat screwdriver was used to lever the door open a tiny bit. The hooked end of the wire slid in the door and the jamb. After some wiggling, pushing, pulling and bending I was able to hook the lock. The wire seems a little too flexy and didn't work to well. It slid off the hook several times. It was my wife who gave the idea to finally make this work. She wrapped a little tape on the hook and presto, there was enough grip to pull the lock open.
The alarm sounded, but no big deal. I slid the now accessible key into the exterior lock to turn it off.
The whole thing took about 30 minutes. Probably faster than the road side service could have arrived. Note this was substantially easier b/c the car was in my garage and I had access to all my tools.
I do have some scratches of paint, but they're on the 'inside' of the door and not a big deal.
I hope this post can bring someone else some luck with getting the doors unlocked w/o the keys.
Note to any flamers out there, any real car thief already knows this stuff and works with tools better than a shirt hanger. This is not news to help the 'bad guys'.

If it's a car with the remote alarm setting the lock; I've heard of people using the speaker setting on the cell phone to transmit the signal from one person to the next.
you know, wife locks the keys in the car, but I have a remote also. So I would push the button and hold it close to my phone. while she has hers on speaker and near the car.
Does this really work?

Might be a good time to get that second key made lol.
I got two sets of keys and a pair of remote starters.
But don't worry, them bad guys don't use anything except a key to open the door to steal the car. Just copy the vin, get a dealer to make the key, disarm the nats and voila!
