Thumbs up 2004 G35x Exhaust Leak

Hey G35 drivers - Hope all is well -

I am curious to know what I should do, there is what I believe to be a leak in my "pre-muffler" or cat right under the rear passenger seat, I have no idea if it's a cat or muffler.

It's leakign though, big time - it soudns cool but lol I dont know what to do.

I was thinkign of cutting it out and placing a pipe there or is there an inexpensive cat-back system I could buy?

Im poor - so Im talking 500 to 700$ max I could spend and I don't even ahve that really.

Any advice would be appreciated - thank you folks..

-Joe

Basically I was looking for any G35x Drivers with a car in the same year time-frame as mine, who has bought an after market exhaust.

What do you think? Any thoughts?

:bump:

Just look for a coupe mid-pipe it will solve your issue? Possibly new gaskets.

Look for used mid pipe for your car at

www.car-part.com

also look in the private classified section of this forum to see if someone is selling a coupe or a sedan mid pipe. $500-700? No way. These used exhaust parts will not be more than $100. Save your money.

Here's a good example of one;

Yup, but you'll have to pay labour still either way, sounds like this isn't a job you're gonna do, but that'll only cost a couple hundred at most.

You have to figure out what piece of the exhaust it's coming from. It could be the cats, y pipe, midpipe or the muffler. It sounds like the y pipe so I would look for a used one in the marketplace. I had a hole in my midpipe so I bought a coupe midpipe for less than $100.

^He said it's under the passenger seat, if it's under the seat it's the midpipe.

Yeah no doubt. OP you definately need to track it down, but if it's under your passenger seat directly, it's the midpipe. If it's further forward, it's sometihng else.

The Midpipe is basically like a huge muffler looking thing, then the piping runs back to the actual muffler from there.

Talking Thank you - Thank you !

I just wanted to come back here and give you all a status update about the exhaust.

I also wanted to say thank you very much to everyone's responses and help.

I ended up taking the vehicle to a friend who runs a Merlin's out here, he lifted the car, showed me that the bottom of one of my mufflers was completely rusted out.

Essentially on the G35X - the all wheel drive vehicle has this large odd shaped muffler under the rear passenger seat - it curves around the drive axle then exits out to the muffler at the rear clip.

They removed the entire muffler, cut it out at both ends, bent a pipe and welded in a small resignator. The problem is solved, no more leak, the car is nice and quiet again and I am very happy.

Cost me $40 for the resignator, pipe and $40 for the labor, he had my car done in less than a half hour.

----

Now I wanted to bring up another issue - wasn't sure if I should start a new thread or not.

When I start my car, it cranks up beautifully then goes dead. If I give it gas - it stays on ---

A friend of mine is bringing in his OBD reader tomorrow to look for codes, but my SES light is NOT on...

Any ideas?

Maybe you need and Idle air reset? try unplugging the negative battery cable for 30 minutes, plug in and start the car. If that doesn't work then try these steps: http://www.technosquareinc.com/350reset.htm

That 'muffler' is what I already explained to you, it's your 'mid-pipe'/resonator. The X's exhaust is no different from the regular G's exhaust, the problem as we've said numerous times was a leaking mid-pipe. Glad to hear you got it fixed on the cheap!

^This. I'd try that first, sounds like an air intake problem, likely just a sensor/mapping issue.

Update - I forgot to mention this...

I should have mentioned this but it occurs only on a COLD start.

Meaning, overnight leave the car, next morning start the car and it's cold outside, it does this.

It does not do it 100% of the time, it's very in-frequent.

Does that make a difference?
