I tried 10w 40 to try to reduce the oil consumption. I would use about 1 quart every 3000-3500 miles. I always thought it was the valve stem seals. I thought I could thicken up the oil when the seals were cold in attempt to stop the leakage past them until they warmed up a bit.

I don't know. Either stay the same and deal with a little oil loss or go to 5w30 dino oil. first I want to see what happens when I go back to 10w30 syntec.

i'd give GC a try also since it a thicker 30 weight oil closer to 40 weight actually.

if that doesn't help then move to a 40w.

PS I've been using GC all year round and it performs well.

My 02 I 35 wouldn't hold on to synth so I switched to dyno and the problem was solved. I can't see how it could be the cold viscosity number could have an effect.

Alright I did an oil change with Castrol Edge Syntec 10W30 so we'll see what happens and I'll update.

What's the exact amount of oil out cars call for? It's a full 5 quarts right?

Yup, 5 quarts assuming you change oil filter also.

I bought a bunch of Mobil 1 on sale and will stick with the tried and true until I run out.

GC has been proven to be the best synthetic oil for the VQ! Used it for years on my Altima and now on my G. My oil analysis from Blackstone always comes back with stellar wear results. I'm sticking with the tried, true and tested!

German Castrol... It's the Castrol Syntec/Edge 0w30 oil made in Germany. It's better than their other oils because Europe has stricter regulations on what can be called a synthetic.

^Thanks dude!!

I will be running some Penzoil synthetic for the first oil change mainly cause I have a couple litres of it already, but need to figure out a good oil for this bad boy. Keep the wear subdued for a year or so anyways. Getting the Amsoil for the trans and diff tomorrow

Re: changing oil from 5w30 to 10w30

The number before the W means winter, 5w30 api SL or better is the ideal viscosity that the manufacturer recommends. Switching from 5w to 10w will yield poorer fuel enonomy. No matter what oil I do not recommend exceeding 6 months for the drop intervals. Nissan/Infiniti 3750 mileage interval is listed in the service manual for city driving and 7500 miles for highway driving.
