Wheel Bearing Gone

So after a month i got my valve cover gasket replaced ($400), my mechanic said my wheel bearings are gone! meaning i need to replace my wheel bearing..... ERRRRRRRRRR why does this things happen to me? Thank god its only two (FR and RL) anyways, some guys were quoting me $860 for everything (labor + parts)
I know it doesnt cost that much......what should be the reasonable price for everything?
Thanks guys

if u can get a local guy to do, i think part is 160 each oem. labor ranges anywhere from 100-200 just depends who does it. but 860 seems a bit steep.

I replaced my front wheel bearings with the help of a DIY on here. The job was cake for the most part. Do it yourself. There is also a DIY for the rears on here, but the job is a bit more involved. However, it is still one that you can do in your driveway if you are handy with the tools.

$860 for left and right sounds reasonable for a shop quote. X models aren't the bolt on and off affair like the rwd G's.

is this a common problem on the earlier model g's? i had a friend who had to replace his twice. anyway, if i were you i'd just DIY and save yourself nearly $1k and you'll also earn some experience in the process.

Seems a little high, parts are roughly $140 each, labor for front is 1.3 rear = 2.8 so 4.1 hours. That is motors labor time. I recommend trying to find the diy someone mentioned and tackling it yourself.

why would only two of your bearing go bad, That don't make any sense.

First bearing to go are usually rear because of RWD (if your suspension is stock). I have never heard of one rear and one front going bad at the same time.

Bearings aren't designed to fail at the same time. When they go they go, there is no making sense of when a part fails.

Front bearings always wear faster because they steer and the angles and forces that act on them change consistantly.

Likewise, one side will wear more than the other because you normally turn one way more than the other. Right turns are more common in North america IIRC.

his bearings failed across from each other.

That is unusual IMO..

In any case if one of your bearings failed on an axle, it is certain that another one isn't that far behind.

If you know how to change a caliper, you can change a wheel bearing. A long steel pipe will help with removing the rear axle nuts.
