Unhappy Winters on Avon Tech 550 A/S?

Hey, all.

I couldn't get my Goodyear GS-D's out of the alleyway, much less drive around the city. These tires are so bad in snow that I might as well be driving on the rims. I think the GS-D's are about the worst all-around tire I've ever had. They slip a lot on dry pavement and are downright dangerous on snow. The only redeeming qualities I think are lateral stability and noise.

I want to get people's opinions on the Avon Tech 550 A/S tires. How are the Avons on snow, rain, dry traction, cornering, lateral stability, noise, etc?

Thanks.

I believe there are some other posts on this already, but I have those tires on my sedan, and I like them. We have had alot of snow in the past couple days, and they have done OK. Much better than the stock tires, but certainly no snow tire. I would say they are a great all season tire if you do not get a ton of snow in your area. Dry traction is excellent, and wet traction/hydroplane resistance is great. 235/50/17 for the sedan.

Are the Avon Tech 550 A/S directional tires? Can you get them in places other than Tirerack?

The 550 are directional. I have had them for about 3 weeks. Have not had them on snow yet, but they are very quiet and seem to handle the wet much better than the stock RS-A's I had before. I put the stock size 215/55/17. They are not for the track, but for $109 ea. from tirerack.com, they are pretty tough to beat. If you will never drive in snow, the Avon 500 might be a bit better in the dry.
