Time to start a new club...
Re: Time to start a new club...
As a pilot and motorcycle owner, being aware 360 degrees at all times is required for survival. In the car, when stopping, I always leave a little room in front and religiously watch the rearview mirror. That extra few feet has come in handy more than once, just enough room to move up and offer somebody an out to the side.

Re: Time to start a new club...
I do usually check my 6, but I don't think it would have helped this time. I was initially fully stopped, 3rd in line to turn right. So the lane was already creeping along. The car in front of me turned right, and then the lights changed to allow left turns in front of me. At this point, my attention was where it should have been.. checking the traffic from the left, checking the signal, and watching the minivan ahead start his left turn, so now I have to wait.. take a quick glance in the rearview, and *whack*.
Anyway, an update on the current situation. Enterprise gave me the Volvo, claiming that the insurance companies usually give you the same class of car that you drive, but that they'd give me two days to confirm it, and not charge me the difference if I have to downgrade. So yesterday morning I called my adjustor and left a voice mail. Yesterday afternoon I started calling back a few times, but kept getting routed to voicemail. This morning I managed to get through, and was told that they'd approve a rental up to 28.99/day, and that they will put me in something of similar size, but not spring for the luxury portion. So I called back to Enterprise, and had them reserve a Grand Am-size car. Later, Enterprise calls me back, saying they have a note from the adjustor saying the limit is 25/day, which covers a Corolla-sized car. As it's afternoon, and my two-day limit with the Volvo is approaching, I call the adjustor back.. but get routed to voice mail, and the mailbox is full. After a couple of hours of not getting through, I get the operator to route me to another adjustor.. who's voicemail says she's gone for the week until next Monday. Finally I get them to put me on with a living, breathing adjustor, and get them to approve the Grand Am-sized car (actually at 29.99/day), after explaining that my car is not a tiny Corolla-sized thing, it's actually bigger than the Grand Am they're putting me in. Even the guy at Enterprise thought the G35 was smaller... it appears everyone gets it confused with the G20/Sentra if they haven't really paid attention. Anyway, I finally get to Enterprise after work, and they're out of Grand Am-sized cars, so they put me in a Mercury Grand Marquis for the lower price. Well, at least it's preferable to a Corolla. The V8 is nice, but this thing is a boat, and the steering is very loose and mushy.
The V70 was nice, and reminded me of the S60 I test drove, and got me poking around in Volvo news again. The S60R and V70R are coming soon.. and best of all, they're starting under $40k. If Volvo comes through, they'll be selling a car that can keep up with an M3 for the price of a 330.

Re: Time to start a new club...
Got the car back today.
They said it was ready yesterday, but there was one bumpy spot in the paint, and it had quite a bit more orange peel to it than the rest of the car. They sanded it down and repolished it, and it's as good as new.
Yippee!
$630 for the bumper repair, $390 for the car rental. Glad it's not on my dime.

Glad that it worked out. What a bummer though to go through it. You always know that it is just a matter of time before it happens but when it does it's a drag.
