yes, the lil metal piece slides off the mirror.. there is a glue you buy from the part store.. stick the glue on the lil metal piece... make sure you have it where u want it b4 your glue it on.. then let the glue settle and then slide the mirror onto it..
Side note: the mirror and the lil metal piece are two parts... metal piece going on first and then mirror goes on

It takes a little bit of force. I had to get a flathead screwdriver in between the button and the rear view mirror and give it a pretty solid twist before the button popped out.
My rearview mirror actually fell off recently, too. This heat is playing HELL with my car. One thing you need to do is make SURE that all of the old glue is off of both the button and the windshield, or your mirror will fall right back off again. I found this out the hard way, and putting my mirror back on ended up costing me nearly $9.00 in materials instead of the orignally intended $3.50.
I actually had to use some sandpaper on the button to get all of the old glue off of it.

Are you going to the stealer for service? I'd do this yourself and save time. I wouldn't put it past a stealer to try and charge for labor to do something like this.
