Yes, what Infiniti calls the "spiral cable" is a possibility. I would think if that was acting up you'd notice other signs because there are many wires in that thing. Radio, headlights, turn indicators, wipers, phone, horn... And they all get gently twisted back and forth every time the wheel is turned... You'll find info on that in "SRS.pdf" of the service manuals linked above. You could also try wiggling the shift lever a bit to see if the CC disengages. More switches there which need to make contact.

Sporadic problems are the most difficult to track down.

Spiral cable was the problem when my cruise control flaked out.

G2B35, What were the symptoms? When you say "flaked out" what do you mean? I had a new quirk today - the set light now only comes on sometimes. The CC engages and holds speed, but sometimes the "set" light is not even on. The cruise light is on. Hmmm.

That was one of the symptoms, yes. Sometimes the set light would be completely off, sometimes dim, sometimes flickering. Sometimes the cruise would work, sometimes not. Then mostly not. Finally not at all.

I have Infiniti Elite warranty, so I'm content to let dealer techs hunt down problems. Same price to me. They first replaced steering wheel switch, no joy. Then they replaced spiral cable and instrument cluster. I'm not sure the latter was necessary, but again, no sweat off my brow with warranty.

My set light at times does not illuminate, but it's a bad led connection or something along those lines because I can smack the dash above it and it will come on. Like the previous said, the CC still works so that's why I knew it was something with the bulb.

I've had a few leds die so far though, pretty sad.

And most likely it's not the actual LED but the solder joint that's the problem. Like our center brake lights in '05/'06 which after a couple years of heating and cooling in the back window would simply stop making contact to some of the LEDs. The manufacturers want to use the absolute least amount of solder to make the connections (no waste) but sometimes it's not quite enough. Or that instrument cluster was the last one made on a Friday...
Sorry for the hijack.
I'm still voting for spiral cable as the OP's next move. But it may be time to have somebody with a Consult 3 plug in and see if they can actually pinpoint the fault. I know, irritating. And the CC is a "convenience" item so it's difficult to spend time and money fixing it.
