suspension question

went to the dealer today and asked about my squeaking suspension and this is the estimate they gave me, and i was just wondering if this can just be changed by myself.

Wow a lot of that is really expensive! You can definitely do a handful of those things yourself, like the shocks. Lots of DIYs here too.

I replaced the belts myself after being quoted 250 dollars by the dealer. I bought oem belts for under 40. that meant the dealer was charging me over 200 dollars in labor alone. what a ripoff! i came home to do some research on this forum and after an hr. i was ready to do the job. the swap took me about 45 min. I imagine a trained technician would take less than 30 with a smoke break thrown in . OP, do as much as you can yourself and save some $$. its very satifying. you have Driver on your side. G/L

This may be of some service. Found in the sticky of our forum.

I changed the rear shocks last week and it only took about 15 minutes per side. I haven't done the other things so I cannot comment on how long those would take. good luck.

I do it all the time hahaha. Don't see why they would. There are so many competitors out there and we all want the best price.

I know you can get an aftermarket and much better set of rear end links for about $100 shipped to your house... EBAY my friend!

But at least did you enjoy the complimentary car wash??

Most of that stuff can be done much cheaper, but it does take a little mechanical ability. Unsure if you have that in you. I think i'm going to do my rear shocks soon and found KYB's for $40 each on rockauto.com. Looks like a straightforward swap.

Belts are easy. $40 and 30 mins of work and done.

$230 to change the C/V boot isnt bad if you aren't sure how to take the shaft out. Having done wheel bearings on my car i can prob get the shaft out in an hour, but for a novice it's not that straightforward. That one i'd prob pay as a torn boot leads to leaking grease leads to failed C/V joint meaning $1000+ estimate to replace the entire shaft. Changing the boots not too bad though if you have some ability to at least pull the shaft

Wow, that is a lot of stuff to change and for it to all go. How many miles?

You can do it yourself with time. The forums are great place for ref.

I would not use OEM shocks as they cost a fortune.

Look for some KYBs on Amazon/Parts Geek, etc., then have a suspension shop install at a fraction of that cost.

The same shop will do a 4 wheel alignment for about 1/2 what the dealer is quoting.

Compression rods most likely do not need changed, but the bushings will....ask them to tell you what's wrong with the compression rod - unless cracked or bent, you should be fine. I would use the dealer for bushings and belt replacement as their price is fair.

Rear OEM sway links are $27 each and the same suspension shop will install them for $40.

Definitely rock the "complimentary car wash".....that was funny....bent over for over 2 grand, but will will wash your car to help ease the pain.

There are dealers on Ebay that sell the complete compression rods for the X for around $350, so it seems they're getting a ton in labor on that job. I'm planning to do the front struts and compression rods on my X very soon - I'm in the parts gathering stage now.

maximum_suspension on Ebay had the best prices for compression rods, just got mine from them for my RWD Sedan a month ago. Great customer service, fast shipping, and best prices...
