General "tune-up"
General "tune-up"
Hey guys, this is my very first post here after quite a bit of browsing glad to join.
I have a 2004 g35 sedan...purchased in the summer of 2008. Bought it from a certified pre owned Lexus dealer with 53k on it. The car currently has 78.5k miles on it. I've heard these cars are like tanks and can run for quite some time, but I am not car savvy in the least. I always maintain the basics as far as proper tire pressure, regular oil changes with balance and rotations but other than that I have preformed no type of "preventative maintenance." I would rather pay for PM now instead of waiting for parts to break and cost way more.
I just had the car aligned and balanced literally this morning (the steering wheel would vibrate at about 65mph and the car pulled). What I'm getting at is...
Would you guys recommend any preventative maintenance or a "tune up" of sorts? I was thinking about changing the spark plugs but I keep hearing varying stories of how difficult it is.. Apparently i just need the six plugs and not te wires as these cars have "coil overs?"

Yeah, a tune-up on these is pretty much plugs since they have individual coil packs. You'll need to check your manual for the service intervals on things like: PCV valve, tranny fluid, power steering fluid, differential fluid, brake fluid and coolant, if none of them have every been changed they are all over due based on age alone. Not a big deal, do them yourself to lean about the car, they are all pretty easy jobs with the right tools and instructions, which are on this site.
Wait til 100K for the spark plugs. I did mine at 106K and they weren't that bad.
For now, fluid replacement, maybe belts, drain/fill the power steering fluid, etc. I assume your's is RWD, so right there are 2 less things to change the fluid on compared to AWD owners.
Rear diff and trans are easy to do. Just start reading up on the boards. Plenty of DIY.

You are past due on the 96 month maintenance, with only 78K miles do you know if the 48 month maintenance was performed or not? it may be worthwhile to pursue the 96 month maintenance if the 48 month has never been done. if you want to be preventative you may want to do it anyway belts, liquids, battery, filters, inspection etc etc etc.
