Knocking/thud noise when stopping
About a month ago I had my rear drivers side wheel bearing replaced by a mechanic. Since then I have put close to 2K miles without any issues. All of a sudden yesterday, I start hearing a whooshing noise like I had something in my rear tire. It would come and go under 40MPH, but the faster I went it would disappear. A couple minutes later, everytime I went to stop, I would hear a loud knocking noise in the rear. The noise only occured when I pressed the brake and the knocking frequency was dependent on speed. If I released the brake during deceleration, the noise would disappear. The noise would not occur during acceleration.
I jacked up the car, did the old wheel shake test. I inspected the suspension, the sway bar endlinks, brakes, anything loose or broken. Nothing looked wrong.
I'm taking it back to my mechanic tomorrow. If it turns out to be the wheel bearing, it should be covered under their shop warranty. It got me thinking though, what else could it be?
