Have you recently checked the oil?

It could be a few things, not using premium fuel, oil or even valve springs

I checked the oil and its fine. I always use premium gas (I don't know about the one owner before me).
IMO it sounds like a slapping noise almost.

Have you changed out your headers? A blown exhaust gasket at the header will cause a ticking sound.

could be a bad belt that has a piece that is hitting something. . . examine your belts.

looked at the belts and the exhaust headers are stock. my guess is the timing chain is loose. is this common with our cars?

There is and inspection playe for the tensioner on the front of the motor it would be the one on the passenger side the other is for the water pump. Common problem on higher mileage 3.5 motors in all nissan vehicles is the tensioner becoming over extended( ur timing chain being stretched to far!
