Question Whats wrong with this?

Firstly, guys, I am new here and I was a member at clubg35 before we all got booted off. I have an 04' G 4dr-auto. My friend has an 04 6MT Mazda 3s (160Hp, 150tq) and he claimed that he could keep up with me, but I thought that I would easily smoke his ***. So we decided to race a few nights ago, and I flew off the line thinking it was already over but he was right next to me the whole way ( i think 1.2 miles)! Is that supposed to be right? I mean I beat my friends Mustang GT a few times but this pissed me off. Keep in mind that the mazda was 6MT and 2, 800. I just dont understand how he kept up.

You were accelerating for 1.2 miles? If you were really head to head you'd have smoked him and it would have all been over in WAY less than 1.2 miles. Unless you were bobbing in and out of cars in a parking lot or between cones or something.

Take it to the strip and try again.

Yes, as Doogie says, take it to the track and do your racing. There's been enough on street racing here lately. We don't condone it.

AS far as a Mazda 3 with 160 HP keeping up with a G with 260 -- it doesn't add up.
Maybe your buddy with the 3 forgot to tell you about the TT he had installed last week.

Listen guys, I know how to drive and I'm pretty damn good at it. I can drive my dad's E55 AMG good too. All I was wonderin was if the weight factor was a huge difference, the mazda being about 600lbs. lighter than my car and 6MT. Thats all.

What make me nervous about the racing posts are the recent news reports that have found that the part of the brain that processes risk assessment isn't fully developed until a person reaches the age of 25.

Check it out...http://www.msnbc.msn.com/ID/6902567/.

I'm sure you're a great driver. But still...

My friend has a Mazda 3 5-door 5 speed (there isn't a 6 speed) and I've driven it. The power is quite decent till about 5000rpms, but then it lags a bit and gets quite thrashy in the upper rpms which is surprising because it's a 4-banger. The motor is definitely tuned for low-midrange punch. It feels like a mid/high-15 second car and according to the mags it is. I could understand him matching your pace if you spun the tires bad off the line, but he shouldn't have been able to keep up after 70 if you spun too much. The topend of the G is quite good. I know my G would crush his from any race assuming is hooked up, which is easy with the traction control. A Mazda 3 does about 86-87mph in the 1/4 and the G sedan auto does 95-96mph in the 1/4 mile. Trapspeed alone shows that the G has a lot more power. Nearly 10mph is pretty significant in the 1/4 mile. That's about 7-8 car lengths.

Thanks DaveB for the info and you are absolutely correct. The mazda 3s are 5 speed, my mistake. I plan to re-race and hopefully as you said: beat him by 7-8 car lengths but I will do it on a track. Street is not cool and bad things are prone to happen on the street as opposed to a strip/track. Wow guys I really feel a lot more mature now even though I'm not quite 25 yet. Latez

I'm sorry man, but my girlfriend owns a Mazda3, and don't get me wrong, I think it's an awesome car....but power wise, it should not be able to keep up. I have driven it many times.

If you really want to see the difference, have him try to follow you on the highway. No contest.

Take it to the track and the G will when.

Also, while you at the track, race a 1999+ 5 sp. Mustang GT and let me know you do.

My brother actually owns a Mazda3 Sport GT (2.3L). Great car. Very cool interior (like an aircraft cockpit). Blows its competition away (Civic & Corrola). It is loaded with convenience features you would not expect at its price range (almost same as G35). In fact, I was surprise to hear it had rain-sensing wipers. I didn't expect his car would have something over my G35.

However, his one complaint was power and acceleration from the 4 cylinders. He is comparing it to his previous car which was a Mazda MX6 (V6, 2.4L, 170Hp). I have driven the MX6. It is quick but no where near the G35. The Mazda3 should not even come close to the G35. Mazda3 may be 600lbs lighter but it's a 4 cylinders with 100 hp and tq less. I'm surprise your friend challenged you. My brother would not even consider it (aside from being pulled over by the cops).

My dad's E55AMG can beat-up your dad's E55AMG.
