04 G35x Engine Swap or valve cover gasket?

After a backyard mechanic pulled my spark plugs the holes were filled with oil & its fouling the new plugs(in one day) . the cars running terrible and i can barely get 8 mpg. I have a slight valve tap . The guy who pulled the plugs i dont really think he knew what he was doing(claimed he was a certified chevorlet technician). He told me i need a new motor cause my bad lifter is causing oil to get into the spark plugs .... Ive read that this oil leaking into the spark plugs is common in Gs . When i recieved the car back from him it was shaking horribly and barely started.

BTW the car has 166K miles on it.

Could it really be the motor or is it my valve cover /gaskets?

Should I take it to the dealer ?

does the production date really matter between 04-06 g35x's ?

I'd venture to say the VC is so bad it's causing misfire issues with the COP's. Hard to diagnose over the net, but based on what you'd say, i'd replace the valve cover prior to a new engine.

Which valve covers are leaking? There was a thread here that gave details on using maxima valve covers, which are cheaper, than the G35 covers. Need to find the thread to find out the specifics however.

I think your mechanic is mistaking the tick for hydraulic lifter tick, which these cars don't have.

VC? COPs? Im lost with the abbreviations sorry :bang head:

I believe the passenger side valve covers are leaking .

I also thought our Gs had hydraulic lifters.. but here is a video of the sound

Sounds like stuck hydro lifter to me, I am still new to my G but I would be pretty suprised if they are solid lifters.

There aren't lifters at all. It's an Overhead cam design. What exactly would you be lifting? The camshaft sits on top of the valves.

The FSM identifies the cup as a spring lifter (page 109)

http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/G35/Seda...5_Sedan/em.pdf

But basically, if you look at the cutaway pic, the camshaft sits on top of the cup that the valve and valve spring sit under. It just provides a smooth surface to press down on. .

The only hydraulics in the valvetrain, are the timing chain tensioners. These rattle on startup typically in higher mileage vehicles, and can rattle all the time if there is damage to the tensioners.

I'm not saying the issue isn't in the top end valve train, but the terminology is incorrect. Hydraulic lifters are usually used in Overhead Valve engines with the cam not sitting over the head.

What do you think the problem is? ^^^

& I took my car into a local reputable dealer ended up being a coil pack they replaced one and the horrible misfiring ended . went ahead and put some new belts on & will replace some more coil packs because there is still a small misfire :roll eyes:

Got 2 belts & a coil pack replaced for $97 bucks

Can you identify the area the sound is coming from?

A stethescope, or a long screwdriver with your ear on the end can help ID where the sound is coming from. Is it on the top end of the engine, or the bottom end?

Have you ever run low on oil? Is your oil level fine now? Does it ever get quieter or lounder depending on temp?

Sounds like its coming from the bottom left side of the motor while facing the car. Its been happening since i got my transmission swapped . It hasnt effected anything performance wise that I can tell.
