Tire upgrade?

Hi all

The only minus to the outstanding G35 sedan is the fact it is embarrassingly under-tired. I have the 215-55/17 Goodyears on now awaiting them to wear out. Can I get some input as to the largest tires (I want to keep the stock 17x7 5 spokes for now...$$$$ being the reason). Another question is changing the aspect ratio too much (right now it is 118.25). Will that effect any electronic systems (VDC) or not? Thanks in advance!

Re: Tire upgrade?
If you want to keep the stock rims, go with a 235/50R17. The speedometer error is nearly non-existant. The VDC is fine as long as you keep all four tires the same size, and don't stagger them (like the coupe). Another possibility is 225/55R17, which is a little bit larger, but still not too far off on the speedometer, and provides some better summer tire choices. Tires wider than 235 generally want a minimum rim width of 7.5" or 8".

tirerack.com is a good source to figure out what sizes fit and what tires are available in that size.

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html is a good resource to make sure you're not too far off on the speedometer accuracy.

Re: Tire upgrade?
I just mounted up Pilot Sport A/Ss in a 235/50-17 and am very impressed so far! I know some G35Ss that have gone with 225/50-17 with minimal differences in overall height, in fact I was initially planning on going with Falken ZE-512 in a 225/50-17 which interestingly, is almost identical to the diameter of the G-Y RSAs (different manufactures have slightly different overall diameters when new for the same size). Another possibilty is a 245/45-17 which I was told would fit our rims with no problem and is still within acceptable limits.
I've heard great things about the Falkens, so if the best bang for your buck is a factor, check them out. See the thread:

Re: Tire upgrade?
Gordgee,

I am also thinking up urgrading my tires and or tires and wheels. How does the car ride and handle with the new setup....also my main concern is sterring pull by going wider has it effected that or does it feel the same as the stock size tires even on roads that are more uneven than others. One time i upgraded tires on a 99 accord and it pulled and i only went from a 205 to a 215 on the other hand that was a honda accord which a a totally different car.

Re: Tire upgrade?
Too early for me to tell yet. I haven't had it out on enough variety of roads and so far, we've had 3 days of snow again so the roads are wet. From what I've heard, most people have noticed a slight increase in tramlining, but not so bad that you have to fight the wheel or anything. In the city so far, I haven't noticed any. The steering response is much improved. Tire noise is almost the same, maybe a little quieter than the RSAs. Because the Accord is FWD, I think that that is what contributed a bit to your previous experience with the minor size difference- just a guess though.

Re: Tire upgrade?
The stock Bridgestone's don't suck at what they were designed to do. They're not a performance tire, they're an all-season touring tire. They provide better comfort, and sportier performance, than standard passenger tires, as well as maintaining decent grip in the wet. They're not performance tires. It's kinda like trying to say our cars suck at hauling lumber.

They do put Goodyear Eagle GS-D's or RS-A's on our cars as well, depending on which option packages you have. I think you get the Bridgestone's with the Winter package -- as the Winter package states that you get all-season tires.

I'd like to get Bridgestone Pole Position S-03's or Michelin Pilot Sports (regular, not A/S), but they don't seem to come in sizes close enough to stock. I'm probably going to replace my tires with Pilot Sport A/S's in 235/50R17 when it's time.

Re: Tire upgrade?
The spring snow and rain Edmonton is getting is a good test for my Pilot Sport A/Ss. Hasn't stopped snowing for 4 days! Good thing it's hovering around melting temperature.

This morning's roads had about 4" of wet snow on them. I AM IMPRESSED! So far, the best A/S tire I've ever driven in these conditions, especially considering 235s! Not sure how they are on ice. Also great in the wet going though fairly deep water with no hydroplaning. I guess there's a reason that Michelin tires cost more than most of the competition.
