Angry Cracked Windshield..Son of a ***** !!! Now with Pics !!!

Well I WAS going to enjoy the weather we are having today and wash my car when I got home. So I did. But in the middle of drying my car, I notice a streak that won't go away.... CRACK

It's on the pass. side near the middle of the wiper. The thing that sux the most, is that it starts from the base and moves up about 7 inches and turns in about 3 inches. So there is no way it can be filled. Can't see it from the drivers seat.

http://users.ev1.net/~mre/Infiniti/WS/windshield.htm

So....Should I have Infiniti replace the windshield, or take it to a third party.

Venting over......decision making started.

thanks
mike

Some people swear by having it replaced with OEM, but I had mine replaced with a PPG windshield, and it's very high quality, and IMO, doesn't seem to pit as much as the OEM, my OEM was just under 3 months old when I got a crack, the replacement is now over a year old, and the pitting is about the same, or less as my 3 month old OEM was, just my $.02.

Thank ABQ.

I'm going to call my insurance in the morning to see if they can help.

I'd like for it to be OEM, but would probably feel more secure having a company that specializes in doing it.

Anyone have recomendations in the Houston area.

Thanks

Same thing happend to me. Infiniti wanted around $1000 to replace the
windshield with the OEM glass. I called up Safelite. I paid around $360 for a
brand new windshield. When they took off the OEM POS,
they noticed that there was no sealant along the bottom edge of the glass. Just a piece of
foam. The guy asked me if I had noticed a wind noise from my old windshield.
He also said that my car should be quieter with the new one. I think it is
quieter! Forget the OEM glass!

Cato - PM Sent.
Thanks for the info.

$1000 for OEM Windshield, forget that. I knew Infiniti might be expensive, but geesh.

Safelite sounds good, or I thought about Binswanger. I've been to Binswanger before and have had a good experience.

Please let me know of any or all places you liked or might recommend.
Please take in account I'm in south Houston.

Thanks
mike

I had the same exact crack the first week I owned my car....basically a small chip turned into a large crack in a matter of days.

The dealer wanted about $1000 for OEM glass

Safelite wanted about $850 for the OEM glass

Safelite got $200 for the PPG aftermarket glass.

I honestly cannot tell any difference between the OEM glass I had and the new 'PPG' glass. Note that they did order the wrong glass the first time because I do not have the Homelink/Auto-Dimming mirror. Believe it or not, the stock rearview mirror uses a completely different mount than does the upgraded unit.

Did it cracked by itself? If there is no sign of chips than I will ask the dealer to replace it under warrantee. I heard or read some G35s are prone to stress cracks and dealer will replace these windshields for free as long as there no evidence of chips.

2005 G35/LakeShore -no mods yet

There is a small chip about two inches about the bottom of hte glass.
I am not sure if it was caused by the crack or a rock. Considering the hood and windshield wiper are covering the area.

Hmmmmmm decisions decisions

thanks

Mine had a very small chip right on the bottom edge of the windshield, I heard it hit, and within an hour, I had about a 6 inch crack, but when I examined it, I didn't see an impact chip, the glass shop said that happens a lot, a stone will come up at an arc, sounds like yours was the same thing!

PPG is actually considered better quality by more than a few body shops I know. Considering they make more $$ on the OEM ones, I'd listen to them.

Silver04,

I live in Sugar Land, as you know. When I called Safelite, they quoted me around $420
to come out and install the windshield at my house. But they said if I could drive up to
their shop, they would knock off $40. So that is what I did. No regrets! They had the exact
windshield I needed, I do not have the homelink rearview mirror. I honestly think they
installed the windshield better than the original, as the original had no sealant along the
bottom edge of the windshield.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I've got a quote into safelite for a price estimate, and hopefully I can get it done soon.

Cato- Where did you drive to? Also, what glass did they replace yours with? PPG?

Thanks guys for the replies.

I hate having my baby on crack.

I still havent gotten it done yet, with it still raining in CA i afraid to do it and get another crack a couple weeks later, this happened to me on my 92 accord, i replaced the windshield, 2 weeks later had a new crack...

Hey bud--

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I had my 05 G a week when I got a rock chip that immediately ran and turned into a foot long crack right along my line of sight. VERY NICE!

I was quoted $850.00 at the dealer, laughed and said thanks. I ended up contacting my insurance company and they referred me to someone who replaced the windshield for $240.00. Honestly, I can't tell any difference between the OEM windshield and my replaced version. I was very happy with the price, installation and quality of the windshield. And, I didn't have to be screwed by the dealer. Good luck with the replacement. I FEEL your pain!

Does anyone else see a pattern here? I have never had a rock chip run like the one on my OEM windshield and it surely appears I was not alone in this experience.
