That ended up being fixed when the water pump was replaced... So now I'm wondering if it can be a heater core problem or fan?

It just acts as if it needs to be burped often

If you keep having to replace coolant and burp the system, you do have a problem. Whether it's a head gasket or a leak.

Kind of like the old Subaru SVX I had. It was always getting air in the system and would overheat pushing the coolant into the overflow. Turned out to be a blown headgasket even though it showed no visual signs.
