HKS Sport Exhaust

Hey guys,

I remember this being a very popular setup back in the day and since I'm driving the G again, I decided to finally take the plunge on it.

I read through some threads on it but a lot of them have sound clips or videos that don't exist anymore. How is the sound compared to stock? I really like stock but just wish it was a BIT louder.

There was one driveby video on youtube that I found and it does sound a bit louder than stock which is good. It's not too loud where it's obnoxious right? I definitely don't want it like 2x louder or anything, honestly like a 20-30% boost would be ideal for me.

My question that I couldn't find any posts on is the in-cabin sound. Is it drastically louder inside the car? I hope not as that is not what I am looking for. I am really hoping it's less than 20% louder in the car as anything more would annoy the **** out of my gf.

Hoping to hear your guys' opinions on this, especially those of you who have it.

I should preface by saying that I don't have any other exhaust-related things changed such as the middy.

If you are cruising with no load there is little to no drone. If you step on it or are going uphill there is some drone, but not a crazy amount. I love mine as it has an almost exotic sound at high revs under full throttle. However if you are light on the gas it sounds good but reasonable. In nice weather i love to roll down the windows and rev high. Had mine on since almost new and have 194k on my car now.

I want to install this muffler also but I'm worried I will run lean.

I have stillen cai, z tube and 5/16 motordyne spacer. Since my car have the old ecu I can't get a tune.

Will my car run lean?

The intake and spacer might make you run lean, not the HKS axle back or the z tube.

Before I bought the spacer I called motordyne. They told me that a spacer and stillen cai will not make it run lean.

I have the HKS axle back exhaust on my 04 sedan along with a coupe midpipe and megan y-pipe. Its sounds great and not loud and annoying vs my old megan racing exhaust setup. I do have a rev up box/CF ztube, motordyne plenum spacer and a Osirus tune. couldn't be happier with it.

I might be selling it though if your interested.

What do you mean when you say "run lean"?

Mine is arriving today so I will probably get it installed this weekend.

It's a pretty simple install right? I've never worked on the exhaust/muffler before but from the pictures and the hardware required from the dealership, it looks like it's only 4 points or so that connect to the car.

I have the hks exhaust with HR Y pipe and coupe mid pipe. It's absolutely perfect. Not too loud at all, wife or kids have never complained about any extra noise. In fact she doesn't even know I switched exhaust. It's comparable to the coupe volume but a lot deeper sound. Super easy to install with jackstands on the garage floor.

Btw I also have Stillen cai, Z tube and intake spacer as well.

I didn't get a tune. Didn't think I would need it for such minor mods. I've been beating the crap out of it all summer too, 100+ deg heat in Texas. No issues with pinging here.

If you have an 03-04 it is a simple bolt on. If you have an 05-06 you need to get the muffler hanger for an 03-04 for the easiest install. The hanger is a simple bolt on also.

Great! That's good to hear; I opened it up last night and read the instructions and it says to use a lift rather than jacks so I wasn't sure if jacks were unsafe or not. I've never worked on anything related to the exhaust/muffler so I'm not that familiar with how easy or difficult it is going to be. Was it stable enough for you with the car on jackstands, that when you were removing the bolts or what not, that the car was stable? I was thinking of renting a bay with a lift and tools ($25/hour) to do the install as I have a few other installs I need to do too. But the place is about 30 miles away.

Mine is the 05-06 and I got all the 03-04 parts from the dealership already. Was going to rent a bay with lift and tools to do the install but it looks like it's possible to just do with jackstands?

Also been thinking about this. The tips look good, but not sure about sound. I hate drone. Went through that with the I35 and finally put a g35 muff on the cat back-drone gone. Also, I really like my current setup with hr ypipe from an 08 Z, coupe mid pipe and new used stock muff. Added to that is a5/16" spacer and a revup half air box. Factor in the $600 or so it would cost me and...I don't think so.
