Considering buying an 06 G35 Sedan 6 speed

I know a lot of people ask these questions, but I'm strictly asking about a 2006 6 Speed Sedan. I haven't seen the car in person yet. It's an 06 w/ 70Kmi for $12.9k at Nissan. I went to look at it yesterday and dude comes back and tells me it has no clutch. That someone test drove it and burned out the clutch.(red flag) But he says they'll put in a new clutch, which could be a bonus, but it definitely turned me off.. Has it been abused?

This could be a REV-UP engine that has oil consumption issues from what I've read. Would the tailpipe have considerable soot after a test drive? Any other ways to diagnose OC issues when I check it out?

Anything else should I specifically look for? Rough trans? Clunking?

From the pictures it looks super clean and low miles, and I really, really, want a 6 speed. (have an X now to trade-in)

I'm not some newb and will be doing a full check on everything I can. I did test drive one last summer, but the owner had obviously added oil before the test drive, and it had 140k and some strange knocking, so I passed on it. So I might just pass up on this one if things don't check out or we don't come to an agreement on price.

Thanks for the help guys! Once it has a 'new' clutch I'm going to check it out..

They are asking WAAAAAY too much for that thing, first off.

Would this be your daily driver? If so, I would pass. You don't want RWD in the northwest for your daily driver.

You really think it's WAAYY too much? Don't get me wrong, I was going to try to get it down a bit. I see ads for them around $7.5k with 140k mi.. And for as high as $14k for 70k miles. So I figured if I could knock it down a little I'd be ok with it if it's in good shape..

I've driven rwd cars for years in the PNW, so that's not really a concern.. I have a truck and 4runner for nasty weather.

If you're experienced, then go for it. Grew up in the NW as well so I know what you mean.

Yeah, 14k for 70k sedan is seriously too much. $7.5k for 140k miles? Damn... I took a look on CL for you and you were not kidding! If you're willing to travel, you'll find much better deals.

Its worth $10k at most, since it has low miles, 6spd, Nav, etc. New clutch could be a good thing.

Many of these G's do have oil consumption, although it could be acceptable (mine does). You could check by test driving a little aggressive, and if you smell a bit of smoke through the a/c vents then it has OC issues. This is the easy way. Obviously you can look under the hood and exhaust pipes if you know how to look.

Ask for full service history/records if available. If its maintained at a dealership, any Infiniti dealer will have the records available.

If they want more than $10k, I'd pass. but if they are willing to work with you on price it might be a good buy if everything checks out mechanically. I'd aim for $9-9500 just for starters. Good luck.

It IS way too much. Sedans are cheaper than coupes, and this is too much for a coupe even. It looks like it may be a nice car, but kinda like they're trying to oversell it. The cars fukcin 10 yrs old for fukcs sake. Let's not even talk about mileage, but where are these miles coming from? City? Hwy? Let's talk about heat cycles. This is not gonna be something you want unless you're gonna become one of "us" and be willing to fix/love this car unconditionally. Don't buy it if your just looking for a car to buy and DD with no probs. Don't do it.

Thanks for the comments! I'll definitely try to push the price down. KBB puts it around $8.9 or so for a private sale. I have an 04 G35x that's in really good shape and a week or two after I bought it I had to fix the oil cooler o-ring. I'm good doing minor and somewhat major repairs but I'm not buying a $10-11k car I need to work on all the time or that needs an engine rebuild. I used to have an RX-7.

This oil consumption thing worries me. I've read, "Just add a quart every 1500 miles and drive the sh*t out of it." Does it get to a point where it's just a smoking pig and eats oil by the quart? Hopefully it has some maintenance records.. I'll give them a call later today and see if they got the clutch done..

Thanks again, It's good to have the opinions from another perspective.

IMHO, I believe they are asking way too much as all the peeps here are stating. I have one but in diamond graphite (I think it's still called that color for a 06), bought it last year with 84K miles for about $7.5k from a private seller. 6 MT, all options except the tech package (keyless start) and Navigation. Over all solid car but burns just a little oil (not really noticeably), that's pretty much it. I have had to change the struts on all four sides but with it hitting almost 100K miles now, it's no surprise. I use the car as my daily and gives me no major issues. She does have a evap sensor (CEL) that is going out, but apart from that, she has been solid.

Regarding the clutch from that car you are looking at, it was probably on its original one, 70K miles is plenty. I would test drive it after they switch it out but definitely lower the price.I do not justify paying over $9.5k for it even though they change the clutch.

Just my .02

My G35x drinks about 1 qt per 1000 miles. I just keep a couple quarts in the trunk and make sure to check it. It's slowly gotten worse since I bought the car (at 15K miles). Used to be 1 qt per 3500 miles. Now at 167K miles it's 3 qt's per 3500 mile oil change.

FYI, as much oil as it drinks, if I clean my tailpipe well, it takes a while for the soot to redeposit back on the pipe.

Called yesterday, still no clutch..

Mustang, have you tried to fix it at all?

I've read and searched as to what is causing the oil consumption issue but still am not sure what's causing it exactly. Crankcase pressure pushing oil into the Cylinders? Cylinder vacuum sucking oil past the rings into the combustion chamber? Bad Rings? Clogged PCV? Or a combination of all of those.. However it looks as though we are not alone..http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/m...tion/index.htm

Still planning to take a look at it once it's fixed..

Changed the PCV, no difference. Had a leaky oil cooler O-ring, but it didn't contribute much to the oil loss.

Been meaning to construct an oil catch can, but not high on the list of priorities for me. Just easier to buy a case of oil at walmart and add a quart here and there.

I have an '06 6mt with the revup and it uses a bit of oil. I have learned never use synthetic oil in it since it drinks it a lot faster than the conventional. It is also my understanding that most of the consumption problem comes from the piston rings until the car is up to normal operating temperature. Because of this I try to keep the rpms below 3k until it is warm and have noticed a reduction in consumption. Check your oil level often and add as needed. Had mine for 4 years and 52,000 miles and it has been fine.

I put a cheap catch can on mine hoping to catch some of that oil I was losing into my intake. After a couple of oil changes there's probably not even 200mL in the can and I had to add at least 2 or 3 quarts in between so I assume most of my oil consumption is still going into the intake. The plenum was covered in oil when I changed my valve cover gaskets. I haven't checked it since adding the can but I'm not catching that much oil so I figure the situation is probably still the same.

When adding the can I was surprised how much vacuum the intake is pulling on the PCV even at idle. I have nothing to compare to but wonder if it's typical. Seems like the engine is just sucking all that oil out of the crankcase.

I will keep this in mind.

So have you purchased it yet?

I bought an '06 6sp last year with 80k miles for $10.5. It was in pretty decent condition, and I think it was a fair price for PP sale. As you know, they are getting harder to find..

FWIW, my Revup motor does not have the oil consumption problem. I run 5w30 synthetic without issues.
