Did some logging today after the 170 thermostat install from a 180 thermostat (mileage/age unknown) and it's good news

With the 180 thermostat at 92-94 degree ambient temperature around town I was seeing 210-212 degree coolant temps. Base timing was dropping down as low as 5 degrees at those temps. Usually 12-15 with a decently cool engine.

Installed a Gates 170 thermostat and drilled 2 3/32 holes to bleed air about a week ago. Same weather again today 92-94 degree ambient temperature around town the car is staying at 195 and at most 199 setting at a redlight or drive through for a while.

Logging of both trips were the same path in lunchtime traffic, same temps, same stretch of highway with redlights.

I've tossed the 180 thermostat but just goes to show average operating temps will drop with factory fan settings and a 10 degree cooler stat. At least in my application changes were 13-17 degree difference. I have learned over the years thermostats vary. I could have gotten a good one and my old one was on its way out or was opening very very slowly. Summer is usually my maintenance timeframe. When everything gets changed.

Just wanted to let everyone in on my experience, the key is to not let the ecu yank 10 degrees of timing driving around. That kills the motors performance, so now my cars feels great 30 min of driving or 5 minutes of driving.

My only complaint right now is intake temps are showing as high as 150-155 degrees at 92-94 degrees ambient temp with a full factory intake. That's 55-60 degrees above ambient. That is horrendous, definitely needs some strong heat preventative measures

Finally replaced the radiator fan assembly yesterday with a TYC set from RockAuto. Maybe the easiest repair I've done to the car in 8 years. They fit and work like OEM, the shroud is identical and dropped right in. $89 shipped to my door, makes me wonder why I didn't do this ages ago. All is well with Amanda again and at 137K miles she's ready for another 100K in my GF's capable hands.

For those who are interested here's a link to the one I used: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...=1431975&jsn=1

Do ya have a DIY? I think it would be as easy as draining Coolant - removing upper hose - remove fan assembly?

Also - is there a Coolant engine block drain? I want to swap ALL my Coolant

I watched a DIY vid on YouTube.

Remove the front half of your air intake, drain about 2 -3 cups coolant, remove upper hose and overflow hose, remove 2 bolts at the top of the fan assembly, and unplug the 2 electrical harnesses at the bottom of the assembly. If you have a stock undertray just remove the fasteners for the front side and you can reach the plugs to pull them out.

Lift the fans out (probably have to move the AC lines on the right a touch, no need to unbolt them) drop the new fans in making sure the tabs at the bottom go into the slots in the core support then re-install everything you took out. Done and done, I didn't need to bled the system either.

On a scale of 1-10 this job is about a .69...........

Sounds pretty simple. Thanks for the reply.

Sounds like a 3 - 10 if you have to lie on the ground though!

I could get that icky Coolant on me too!

I plan to drain it all and swap out that Coolant while I'm at it. Still looking for a block drain.

I looked at the FSM but I must have failed, I didn't find any block drains. Google and YouTube searches were also frustratingly unsuccessful.........

I just had to cycle Coolant 4 times and use 1.5 gal of concentrate with equal parts distilled water.

Had to add 0.5 cup after the drive to operating temp.

I just installed the SPC Toe Bolt kit and now whenever I drive I hear a click or a knock on the driver side only. What could it be?

I don't care what anyone says, the G sedans look better than the coupes. Even in today's standards a 2003-2006 G looks great. I want those wheels bad, can't ever find any that aren't beat all to hell
