Changing gears roughly when engine is cold

Hey guys, I have an 06 g35 sedan AT I bought back in February 2016 with 128k miles on it. And when the engine is cold (when I start it in the morning) and change gears to Reverse or Drive (depending on which direction i parked the car) it jumps dramatically into the gear. Once I start driving it shifts normally. This dramatic jump only happens when the engine is completely cold and i change gears from Park. I stop some where Like the grocery store or something and I jump back in the car and change gears, it shifts fine. Also I don't have any check engine lights. What do you think it is? Maybe I just need the tranny fluid replaced? You think there's something wrong with the tranny?

That actually sounds normal to me. The first time of the day you start the car it will idle up to warm itself. With a higher idle any shift will be a little more harsh. One of the vets may correct me, but that's just my line of thought weather it be right or wrong..

Thanks bro. It just concerned me cuz my wife's 2010 scion xb doesn't change gears roughly even if I immediately change gears when I first start it, even when it hasnt been driven for an entire day.

mine does that too and I think it's what Jimmyznutz was saying. It caught me off gaurd when I first bought the car last year. The G would try to launch itself out of my garage if I didn't have my foot firmly on the brake pedal.

Thank God! I was getting worried man. Glad to hear it's normal!

I let my car idle on cold starts for mintue and a half to let the idle drop. Not sure what Nissan tech were thinking with this high idle but it can't be good for the transmission shifting into gear at 1,500 rpm.

Might be a bit old of a thread. But this happens to me too. If anyone else drives my car it's like a mini launch control and it always throws them off guard. I like to say it's the nature of the beast

SOLUTION: Before shifting into reverse. Put the shifter at the HALFWAY point from P and R. On the dash it will be blank. And you'll notice your needle jump ever so slightly and then settle down to something reasonable (ie. 1k or less). When it's done dropping you can complete the shift to R or D. All in all it's about a 3 second process so if you're in a rush you can't really pull this off.

My car has always shifted hard from P to R or D. In fact, even if you mash the brake pedal, shifting from R to P will make the car lurch.

It did it at 15K miles...and it does it now at 172K miles even despite only having one driveshaft connected today

More like accidental RWD conversion

I bought a new car to drive. I needed something reliable with less miles. G35 is currently sitting waiting for me to do something to it. It still runs fine, so I might try to fix it. Either repair the broken stuff...or RWD conversion. At this point...it wasn't even worth anything on trade in which is why I kept it. If the front diferential is fubar, i'll go RWD just to get a running and driving car. Im not replacing the front diff.

Quick OT question for you. When you converted to RWD, what did oyu do with the transfer case? Did you just yank out the driveshaft or did you stuff the yoke back in to seal it up? I'm figuring if I convert to RWD, I will pull the CV axles, swap the front bearings to the RWD style w/hub and remove the driveshaft to the front diff, and just put the yoke back in to keep everything closed up. I'll prob pull the AWD fuse, except when I need to get car inspected.
