6mt question: When to shift??

I'm still in my break-in period with only 300 miles on her, but I'm wondering how/when you guys are shifting your 6mt. For example, right now I'm taking the car (fairly quickly) up to 4K rpm and shifting per the break-in advice. I personally believe that you get better gas mileage by reving the engine as opposed to lagging it. My Dad's an aerospace engineer for Boeing and has owned manual transmission cars all his life. I can still remember him YELLING at me when he was teaching me to drive a stick...."DON'T LAG THE DAMN ENGINE!!!" lol

Anyway, for those of you with broken in G's, what's your shifting schedule look like? How high on the RPM's do you take it without stressing the engine too much? I'm thinking between 5K - 5.5K. Thoughts??

Newbie here on g35driver with a 05 6mt... been shifting at about 3200-3300, occasionally at around 4000, just depends on my mood and the flow of traffic. So far, I've been able to get about 16.5 mpg out of my first two tanks (mixed city/hwy in Southern Calif.)

Whatever feels good. Sounds like you're doing fine right now. If you're looking to blow the doors off of the car next to you then obviously it's 7k... other than that it depends on how you feel like driving that day.

Is it my imagination or is the "Rev" light the most cheesy thing on the G? Why, Infinti, why? If you are buying a sports car with MT, shouldn't you already know when to shift? The only other car I remember having a shift indicator was my step mother's 1988 Ford Festiva. What is the world coming to?

It's about optimum shift points. If you're racing, you're not going to be looking at the tach. And engine noise will start droning as you get up in the rpm range. And not every car should be shifted at it's highest rpm. It all depends on the curves. Do I really think it's necessary for this car? No, but I do know guys who do drag strip racing put shift lights into their cars.

Shift points for high gas mileage

I recommend shifting at 2500 rpm for outstanding gas mileage. The G has lots of torque at low rpm and it handles it well. I get mid 20's in my 6 speed Maxima(2003) if I shift at 2500. If I increase shifts to 3500 gas mileage will drop to no better than 20 mpg.

Shifting at 2500 will really increase gas mileage that much? I have never gotten above 20mpg...and that is all hwy, hwy/city, and all city. I normally shift at 3k, but I have heard that lagging the engine (which seems like what happens at 2k and below) would suck gas, especially if you try to accelerate.

I have to disagree with the poster who suggested shifting at 2500 RPM. I got 18.5 MPG on my very first tank of (regurlar most likely) gas, and I was shifting at about 3750-4000 RPM damn near every time. I don't think shifting at low RPM's will help your gas mileage, in fact I'd be willing to bet that's the primary reason why automatic transmissions don't get the kind of mileage that manuals do.

My question was intended to read....How high (RPM) can I take her without doing damage to the engine? I didn't buy a RW drive sports sedan to shift at 2500 RPM, but I don't want to crank it out at the redline either.

Still waiting form my 6 spd to arrive but my guess is to shift at the rpm in which the linear increase in power starts to wane. I would think that is the rpm level that the peak hp is reached. I would have thought to use the rpm level that the torque maxs out at but that is too low so on this last thought I am applying guesswork to my response.
