air

i have an 2007 infiniti g35 and my air doesn't work all the time. Sometimes if I let it sit for about 10 mins before I go anywhere sometimes it'll come on and other times it will. Nobody can think what's wrong with it and the last shop said they would have to take it completely apart but they didn't want to deal with it.... Do ya have any thoughts what could be happening?

Go to a real shop, who the heck turns away a paying customer because they "don't want to do it". If you want to make it work for a while and possibly shorten the life of the compressor grab a can of AC Pro from your local parts house, just make sure it's the can with the gauge. Read the directions it's pretty simple to do your own charge with them.

It could be a ton of things, but that shop doesn't make sense.

Does your compressor turn on? It should spin separately on it's own or if you can hit it with a broom handle that might jolt into kicking on.

I had a similar problem with a Volvo I worked on. The compressor clutch was out of spec, so that A/C would work intermittently, but it would get hot and expand further than spec. Normally, you have to replace the clutch, compressor, or reshim it. I did a hack fix and shimmed it from the outside to spec using zip ties and some magnets from RockAuto.

Could be an evaporator issue as well. Ever have your home A/C system freeze up from a dirty filter or something? It would be similar to that happening.

Too many variables to diagnose over the Internet. I'd either read the FSM or take it a good quality shop for a proper diagnosis.

There really arent THAT many variables.

First, OP, what do you mean your air won't come on? You mean the AC doesn't get cold, or you mean the fans arent coming on (not actually blowing air)?

If the AC isn't blowing cold, you can try to refill it with one of those DIY cans you get from an auto parts store, but if the doesn't work, you'll have to take it to an AC specialist. Those systems are fairly complicated.

If the air is simply not blowing thru the vents, your shop is correct and you will more than likely have to take apart at least some of the dash which, as anyone who's done a stereo swap in the G knows, it can be quite time consuming. There is a box fan in the HVAC system that gets dirty with debris over the years and that debris can build up and block the fans from moving. The fan can most likely be removed, cleaned and reinstalled, but worse comes to worse, theyre fairly inexpensive to replace. The amount of work involved for a shop to do it however would be fairly expensive simply because of the time involved.

Plenty of DIYs on here on how to remove the dash stuff.
