Omg!!!

On the way back to work tonight (I had to do an IT move tonight), I got behind some traffic at a traffic light so I entered the very end of what I call the suicide lane (the center neutral lane) because it was clear all the way to the light. Actually only about 50 feet or so of the lane was neutral, the rest of it was painted for the left turn. I'm going along minding my own business, and a truck suddenly peeks out into the neural lane. Instead of him edging in to see if there was anyone there (me) he goes all the way in and stops blocking the entire lane. I slammed on my brakes and slammed on my horn, I really didn't think my car was going to stop in time. I did stop though with like an inch to spare. I took a deep breath and looked up and saw that he had the nerve enough to be yelling at me. So I gave him the finger and politely rolled down my window to tell him to f himself and to learn to drive.

I know I woudn't have been at fault but I really didn't want to deal w/ the hassle of getting a 3 month old car fixed.

This is the only time that I miss my Jetta, it being a light car with really good German brakes.

Good save. Your right I would hate to have a bashed op three month old car. The G35 will outbrake that jetta any day of the week.

Yes, that's when we really appreciate the G's brakes, even if they don't last!

You've got to be kidding me. You'd probably have died if you were in the Jetta. I think the G outbrakes the Jetta by about 10 feet (the entire length of the Jetta).

Jayhawk I'm glad that you and your car are OK. Also very impressed with the polite manner in telling the driver to fornicate with himself.

I really don't know... I drove my Jetta for 2 1/2 years (it was a 2001) and I swear it stopped faster. I'm not knocking my g35 at all, but the Jetta being a 4disc brakes, pretty big ones on the front, and the fact that it was alot lighter of a car, I am pretty sure it stopped faster. The Jetta was also a 5* safety rating. It is a really safe car. I just wanted something bigger, faster, and not a 5speed (so my wife can drive it).

Glad to hear everything is fine with you and your G35. I had a similiar incident just last night. I'm on the far right lane and this idiot in the far left lane on a 3 lane road crosses to the middle lane and then into my lane in one lane change because this idiot had to turn right at the next light. I had to brake hard and of course I honked too. Damn idiot, is your need to make a right turn at the next light worth getting into a car accident? Just pass the damn light and make a freaking U-turn! How hard is that? Rather than pushing your way through and make everybody behind you brake! Some people just need a good a_s whopping!

I don't know how big the brakes are on a Jetta, but the G35's aren't shabby, especially the 2005s: 12.6" ventilated discs in the front, 12.1" ventilated discs in the rear, 4-channel/4-wheel ABS. I've seen 60 - 0 in 110' in a couple different tests that I've seen. As part of my test drive, the salesman had me specifically test out the brakes, and showed me a 40 - 0 stop in probably less than 40'. It helped sell the car!

Technically, Jetta is not made in Germany.

I had a close call today too... some lady in an accord merged into my lane going about 20 all of a sudden and I was going about 50. I braked so hard I felt the ABS pulsate for a good 3 sec and blared my horn for a good 10-15 sec... damn horn is not loud/mean enough. I have about 2 inches before I hit her...

You are correct, well at least 1/2. Most of the parts are manufactured in Germany. I believe my 1.8t engine was too, but could be wrong. The final assembly is in Mexico. I would still say it's a German car, at least as German as a BMW X5 assembled in the US.

Anyways.... I am not compaining in the least about the brakes of the 2005G35. If it had crappy brakes I would not have bought it. I could have just got an American car for that. I was PLEASENTLY surprised / relieved when my car came to a stop last night and still had an inch to spare. If I was in my Blazer that I had in college, I would have hit them for sure.

If the G35 Sedan weighed what a Jetta did, it would faster.

Dunno about that...I got a warning for traveling in the middle 'suicide' lane to get to the turning lane. My guess is that you would have gotten the ticket for improper lane travel or something along those lines.

2003-2005 Volkswagen Jetta GLI VR6
The VW Jetta finally goes back to its performance roots, with a 24-valve 200 hp VR6 from its European Bora twin, sport suspension and a six-speed manual as standard. There is no automatic GLX or wagon variant offered for 2004.

Base price : $22,950 Get a free price quote

Engine : V6, DOHC, front engine FWD
Displacement : 2,792 cc
Valve : 24 valves, 4 valves per cylinder
Transmission : 6-spd manual
Fuel economy : city - 21 mpg
highway - 31 mpg

Suspension : F - Independent MacPherson strut
R - Semi-independent torsion beam axle
Brakes : F - Vented discs
R - Solid discs

Horsepower : 200 hp @ 6200 rpm
Torque : 195 lb-ft @ 3200 rpm
Redline : unknown

Top speed : 146 mph
0-60 mph : 6.9 sec.
0-¼ mile : 15.8 sec @ 90.0 mph
60-0 braking distance : 140 ft
200 ft skidpad : 0.79 g

My guess is that there was some added dive in the softer Jetta suspension that made the car feel like it was braking faster.

Even though you may feel you are stopping doesn't make it so. I have a civic and that thing "feels" like it stops faster than my G but objective data states otherwise. The G is much tighter in suspension and I suspect that has mostly to do with how it "feels" during braking. According to objective data, you would most likely hit the truck pretty hard. 140ft is pretty bad in terms of braking these days.
