High idle, SES light, 03 base sedan automatic

Hello all. Im trying to fix a high idle in my car. I have cleaned the maf, and the throttle body. While in there I also replaced the cam position sensors to fix a hot start issue. I have been trying to do the re calibration for idle speed, but cannot make it happen. Im having trouble making the SES light blink and then light steady in step 4. The ses light is steady on throughout the re learning procedures, and it never goes to blinking then steady again.

Also, in the procedure, the manual sais to be sure the PNP switch is "on". Ok, so what does that mean? I assume that "on" means the shifter is in either park or neutral?

I have tried the easy way as lined out in another thread, counting to 10 instead of 7,,, just not having the ses light go to blinking and then steady to indicate the procedure is working.

Currently the car idles around 850 rpm with trans in park, no accessories on, and fully warmed up. I know thats a bit high for any vehicle, not real bad, but enough to throw the code.

Car has 129k miles, and runs like a top, very strong and smooth.

Might not be the correct procedure, use the ones here it's an exact copy from the factory service manual.

Make sure you are using a watch or something that accurately displays seconds, the timing needs to be very exact.

Also, you need the engine up to operating temp to do the idle recalibration or it will be screwed up.

OK, I will use a stopwatch and see if it works. I am able to get the first 2 re learning procedures to work, the pedal position, and the throttle body calibration,, both fine.

Check for vacuum leak. If you have a leak you will not be able to fix the idle

After messing with it I have the idle down to about 750 according the cars tach. Still high I guess. Any common vacuum leak areas?

Yeah there's a few points to check, the big obvious one is the intake duct so remove it and pay particular attention to the corrugated flexible section. Next with the intake removed you can access the rear pcv breather tube that's below the throttle body, the tube at the front of the intake that connects both valve covers, and the pcv valve (and tube) in the passenger side valve cover.

The PCV valve screws in, remove it and shake it to ensure it rattles, if it doesn't rattle spray it out with throttle body cleaner until it does rattle again.

All those tubes you checked should be SNUG and should not rotate easily by hand, if they DO rotate remove the factory spring clamp and replace it with a screw-style clamp so you can get it tight. Another option since if they do rotate (which means they are worn out) is to order a replacement kit from Z1 motorsports, here's a link which also includes a handy diagram of where those 3 tubes are located.

https://www.z1motorsports.com/z1-pro...it-p-4284.html

Perform the idle reset again if you do find problems and correct them.

Also, 750 while in park is within spec, it's a little high though if that's the rpm while in gear.

Im just trusting the obd code which I dont remember,, but the verbal explanation was high idle. So, perhaps it might be another issue? Anyway. I have to find a user friendly stop watch, and then check the hoses. Hoping to fix that issue and then move on to the next issue.

You can usually just use your phone to count seconds.
