Angry 1st rock chip. Touch up paint?

4 days after having the 3M clear bra installed, I had the horror of watching a piece of wood/plastic nose dive right into the middle of my hood!! It was like a Saturday Night Live episode. I saw the crap coming in slow motion, and there was nothing I could do but cringe. It literally dove down onto my hood like a Roger Clemens split finger fast-ball. Oh well, it was destined to happen.

Is there Diamond Graphite touch-up paint available yet? I might as well repair it while it's fresh in my memory. <sigh>

Dings and chips happen but you can repair them quite well with some touch-up.
Attached is a pic of both Nissan types I've tried: the pen type which also has a clear coat applicator, and the conventional brush type which I prefer.

The code for Diamond Graphite is WV2

The problem with touch-up paint is, it hides the flaw somewhat, but you always know its there. My wife parked my Sedan with the bumper hanging out of the garage. I washed it the other day and to my horror I spied this single long scratch right down the middle of the bumper. I knew who had done it immediatly. Now I'm real strict about rule number one. She may not drive the G35!

Colin,
I've never had good luck with any touch-up. what is that "pen", does it work like a paint marker or something?

Where can you get the touch-up pen? The dealer?

I think noone really has a solution for this. But what I've done is use the dealer touchup pen with Lanka. It works pretty good if you do it just right. It's difficult but provide the best result short of getting it totally repainted. GL.

I can't remember what the stuff is called, but there is a solution you can rub on an area that has just been touched up and it will remove the extra paint so you don't get a paint bump right where you just applied the paint. I've heard many good things about the stuff. I've got a clear bra, too. And I'm so happy I had it installed, but it doesn't protect the entire car, unfortunately. I've got a couple small chips on my hood, too, that I'll be fixing this summer. Good luck.

I'm glad to hear that they have touch up paint available. I've actually had pretty good success with touch-up. Of course it never looks as good as factory paint, but if you apply it correctly it will look much better. Addtionally, if you apply the touch-up and some clear coat, your local detail shop can buff it to a mirror shine for next to nothing. That's why I've had success. I apply the paint myself, but I'm not too concerned about excess. Later on down the road, I'll take my car in for a detail and they'll buff all of the overfilled chips for me. It's not a bad way to do it.

Thanks everyone.

Tom & Lawboy05,
I got the 'pen' from the dealer, but had little luck with it. It was available up here in Canada b4 the conventional brush touch-up kit, so I tried it.

The idea is good with the clear coat applicator too, but it never worked very well for me. At $20, its cost could buy 3 of the other bottles.

As we know, silvers and other high metallic paints are hard to blend in, and the touch-up approach is patchwork at best. tho much cheaper and more convenient than a pro job.

Colin

NO...the paint still isn't that great and seems pretty thin to me.

I had some touchup paint applied to my fender a week ago at the dealership. I didn't trust my application.

On the downside, it isn't noticably better looking than before. On the upside, at least the bare metal isn't still visible, which should help prevent rust.

Just curious if anyone has had their hood repainted due to road rash (chips/scratches etc)? Is the re-paint more durable than the stock paint? I keep my cars about 7-8 yrs. When it is 5yrs old--I plan to repaint front bumper and hood only and replace the grill. I figure that will freshen up the front end.

There's a great article on how to do your own touchup:

http://www.autoeducation.com/carcare/paintchips.htm

Already bought the touchup paint from the dealer and just waiting for warmer weather to try the technique.

Most important - patience!
