I found this on our garage floor underneath the engine area of our 2005 G35X Sedan. Can someone please help me identify what it is and what it does. How important is it?

can't believe cleric was stumped. i've seen that on my x too. i don't know what it's for. it's just below the transmission somewhere. it's a bunch of weights and they're mounted to something that's a little springy. almost like curb feelers for the bottom of your car. but honestly doesn't look like it would help save anything if you drag it.
Thanks, I did look under the car, and there seemed to be a spot similar to what you are talking about where it seemed to fit, just didn't make sense as it was as you say squishy. Does anybody body have any idea what it's purpose is and and problems if we continue to drive the car?

I have no idea but I was intrigued enough to poke around the diagrams on the InfinitiPartsDeal site. A ruler in the photo would be nice to get a sense of scale.
Is it possible that this is a "Heat Insulator - Front Floor"? That seems to be the only thing I can see that remotely has the appearance and shape of what you are showing in the pics. There are two, one right hand and one left hand.

Just changed the transfer case fluid and did a drain/fill on my tranny this weekend. I noticed that sticking out from underneath the vehicle and also wondered what the hell it was.
Mine was also "squishy" if you pressed on it and it was able to move side to side. It was attached to the exhaust pipe just downstream of the y-pipe; I agree it is probably for vibration dampening. I would like to say it also protects from road interference but seeing as it was easy to manipulate, chances are it wouldn't do so well against a rock.
In short, you're fine without it. Your car is still going to function all the same.
