I removed the battery on my 2006 G35x AWD sedan and when I put the new battery in I realized the gas gauge spiked way past the normal level now it is stuck below the little stopper next to empty is there any way to reverse it or will I have to completely remove the cluster and do it manually? If anyone knows how to remove the gauge cluster or how much it costs at the dealership to have that done let me know ASAP thanks.
Never heard of that before. Try disconnecting/reconnecting the battery, you are making sure the NEGATIVE cable is the first on disconnected and the last one installed yes?
You can put the cluster into diagnostic mode to test it for function.
Yes I installed the battery correctly and I have tried the diagnosis mode but since the gauge is stuck behind the little stopper it won’t allow it to move. The gauge would somehow have to go in reverse to bring it back to the normal position.
Take a picture of what you're talking about, it sounds like you're saying the needle somehow jumped over it's zero stop (or broke off the zero stop) and has unwound itself.
If you don't see the zero stop, it's a very small piece of plastic sticking up off the gauge cluster at the bottom of the range, then the entire cluster will need to be replaced since it's physically damaged. Without a zero stop the needle will unwind itself, there's a spring in it to keep it zero'd when the stepper motor isn't engaging it.
It's also possible the zero stop spring broke and the stepper motor pushed the needle all the way around until it bottomed out on the wrong side of the zero stop.
It is a little hard to see but the zero stop is still there. It spun all the way around and stopped on the wrong side. the gauge still moves when i turn the car on and off but of course its not where it needs to be.
So as the tank empties does the needle move clockwise? Or as you fill the tank does it move clockwise?
I can't think of any reason outside of physical mechanical failure that it would cause the needle to spin around to the other side. A full tank measures very low resistance (3 ohms) even if you were to completely short out the wire against ground it would only move the needle slightly above the full mark. Empty is 80 ohms.
I don't think that a stepper motor could even generate enough momentum to spin the needle all the way around if it did go instantly from a high resistance reading to grounded short. The motor still takes time to wind up and it would have to exceed the rpm of the motor just to get it to spin around, then the return spring should zero the gauge back out again. That makes me think the return spring broke internally.
Just for curiosities sake have you put the combination meter into test mode and tried to see what happens?
Once it's in test mode you push and release the odometer button to make it do Things™. The gauges will only move to 25% value, the FSM is a little hazy about that part.
I used the self diagnostic mode and all the gauges move except the fuel one. It doesn’t move with the amount of gas in the tank it only moves when I turn the car on and off. When the car is off it is about 2 centimeters to the left of the zero stop, then when the car is on it moves and pushes right up to the zero stop and stays there.
I have the exact same issue on my 2007 g35 coupe. Seemed to happen after my battery went dead and put way too much fuel in... How did you finally fix it? Thanks
