Auto Headlight setting...

Auto Headlight setting...
I recently picked up a 2006 G35 Sedan and I am enjoying cleaning it up. Mine does not have the “Auto” selection on the headlight switch and I am curious if I can easily convert it by swapping my turn indicator/headlight column to the 25540-CM31A part. I am guessing that it is not that simple and that there needs to be a sensor that determines the change in light conditions.
Anyway, I look forward to any thoughts.
Thanks.

It's a function controlled by the BCM so I'm going to just GUESS it's definitely not that simple. You can do a little research into the system yourself, details of the system are located in section LT - Lighting of the FSM, auto lights are on page 52.

You could try poking around though and take power from pin 17 on the BCM and jumper it over to pin 14. That's basically the circuit the power goes through the photocell and you would mimic it by just making jumper stabs on those two pins and manually touching them together to test it. I assume you will have nothing in the pin 14 location on the BCM but it's entirely possible the vehicles all used the same wiring harness and you might even have provisions for the photocell inside the dash somewhere.
The auto position on the combination switch will be a little trickier probably, it's in section BCS - Body Control Systems and the lighting it at the front of the document starting on page 3. It's a bunch of transistors that send input back to the BCM and after reading through it would seem that the BCM is natively designed for the auto headlight system so you might NOT need to replace it. Definitely need to investigate more on the issue though.

I was under the impression (without ever researching it) that there was some sort of light sensor that picks up the outside lighting conditions that was part of the auto light system. I'm only going off my knowledge of other brands when making this assumption. My 05 has the auto feature so I never investigated it.
