Yeah it sounds like a transmission issue, is it throwing any tranny codes?
You shift from park to drive and it immediately shows 4th gear?
Does the engine still rev smoothly while in gear?
Is there any change in the dash indicator when you shift to manumatic mode and manually downshift to 1st?
EDIT: What is the tranny fluid level after trying to shift through reverse/drive/park with the engine running?
So it shows drive while in drive, when I switch to manumatic(has to be done within seconds or it stalls) it shows 4th. I can shift up and down in manumatic and it changes as expected, but still stalls. If I switch back to any of the working gears it will keep running, last night I had it nearly stall and come back when switching to neutral.
I have check the relay under the glovebox and last night I took out the engine fuses, under the dash and hood, turned the car over and reinstalled the fuses. It seemed to help a little, the car moved a few inches before stalling, but nothing major.
I don't have a V35 with a 5AT to test it on so I'm not sure. Maybe someone else can chime in, I know there is a nissan specific addon for TP that might also have transmission stuff. Possibly also the Nissan Datascan II android app might read tranny codes?
Well I couldn't get Nissan datascan 2 to fully connect with my scanner. I did get rid of all of the engine codes though.
Now on to the fun bit.... I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure my problem is a plug towards the rear driver's side ( left) it is pictured below. Any idea how I might go about finding some plugs to replace the bad ones? Also found the atf was black and had some metal in it...
Ooof... RIP that harness, yes you can probably find replacement ones, just search for it. Most harnesses you can source a replacement OEM-like harness. Some of the less common harnesses you end up using generic ones (or chopping ones off a salvage vehicle at a pick-n-pull). Just google search for the harness name with G35 in the search body.
What was it? 2003-2004.5 transmission harness with the 3 plugs coming out of the tranny? If so it would be easiest to find a pick-n-pull and go chop the harness off another 2003-2004.5 350Z, G35, M35, FX35, possibly also M45/Q45 since they also used the RE5R05A transmission. In 2004.5+ they switched the harness on the transmission to use a single large black harness instead of the 2green 1black like the earlier ones had.
That's quite a bit of sediment in the tranny pan but I would focus on the melted harness first, transmissions usually have a decent amount of **** floating around in them if the fluid hasn't been changed in 100k miles or more but they will typically still work.
i didnt have the car jacked up properly to get behind the transmission. hoping to build some cribbing and jack the car up as high as i can so i can get a better look at it. once i do that ill either go out to a pull a part or see if i cant order it online.
ya... i had seen the green on the trans support, but figured it was just some paint. then i dropped the pan and bam melted plug.... i jsut laughed and was like well theres my problem. im guessing someone didnt hook it in securely and its been swaying around since.
guess ill be going over every wire and bolt while i have it up.... also going to pull the cats and maybe look into doing some bushings.
its a 2004, probably early. im hoping to just get the ends... my plan was if i have to pull the transmission im just going to do an manual swap and i think that goes for the harness too haha
edit: oh ya, i was far less worried about the gunk in the pan after seeing that plug... ive also seen far worse. based on the gunk and the color id say it hasnt been serviced in most of its life. kind of wondering if the car has had and engine/trans swap based on the loose wiring harness all over and things not being mounted properly.
Working on filling the trans back up and seeing if by some miracle that plug still works. I drained 5 qts, put back 3.5 and am about to go get 2 more. Just wanted to post some more pics and see if I might be right about what plug I'm looking at.
I found a picture of the drive train taken out ( was looking for the dipstick mounting point since the idiots didn't put it back and bent it) and found a really good picture of the harness, pre cooking. I'm assuming what I need is that back green/grey set, any idea what that might control?
Also here's a picture of my ATF.... That looks like engine oil ouch.
Also as a precaution to anyone who thinks they can change a drive train without putting the harness back correctly, please stop and call a mechanic. Look at this rats nest...

Don't think that will help mine sadly, I'm talking about the flip up door on the center console that covers them. In my experience it's probably a broken plastic lever of some kind... Would have to pull it apart to find out. Mostly focusing on getting this thing on the road first. Though I might have a week or so to go over the various interior fixes.
Well it's been a long few weeks for me, I got the plugs and got them ready to install only to find out that the harness was melted all the way to the dust cover into transmission. Had to cut off a good 6 inches of the body harness too. Went back to the pull a part and got the rest of the harness, plus a trunk with the aero spoiler, and the upper part of the reclining rear seats.
The trunk went on just fine and I think everything works( do the white lenses on the trunk lid light up in some position?). The seats bolted right up, but I had to modify the lower part for the handles, they work great. Now the harness was fun... That dust cover sure likes to stay attached.
So the dust cover on mine broke when I pulled it out, assuming either how burnt it was or dry rot. It was a pain to fish those plugs back in, but I got them. The ATF was brown, but more red this time so I put in 5qts of new ATF. After all of that work, the blood and sweat and almost tears, she started up and drove forwards and backwards. Even put it into manumatic and it worked fine there too, even though it still starts in 4th. I am happy so far though, still need to take it around the block, but it's loud without the cats on it.
You can diy the headlights. definitely 2k clear coat them if you do. Buy some basic oem replacement hid compatible lenses. Lots of places to get these offline. If you want some aftermarket halo and sequential headlights for a 2003-2004 bit pricey but worth it. if youre wanting some more futuristic for our ancient cars haha. VQPLUG has lots of exterior pieces. visit https://vqplug.com/products/g35-seda...ial-headlights. http://www.z1motorsports.com is a good place for oem and aftermart pieces. rather it be exterior body, interior pieces, or performance.
