Checking engine oil levels

I feel dumb asking this question.

It's almost impossible to get accurate reading for my 2005 sedan. No matter what, the oil on the dipstick always spreads when I take it out, resulting in oil over the max line.

I've checked when engine has cooled for over 10 minutes, which is what the user manual suggests.

Am I doing it wrong? Anyone else had this problem?

You can check it early in the morning when it’s cold, or you can pull it, wet it with water, wipe it off, and then check warm. Odd, but it works.

I only ever check oil on a cold engine before it's been started for the day.
