Coupe Mid-pipe & HKS
Coupe Mid-pipe & HKS
Got my mid-pipe installed today with my HKS muffler……
The combination works great together.
Sound is amazing, deep & sexy with a nice gurgle on trailing throttle.
For those concerned about drone; ……no worries.
I previously had a Borla, which I removed due to drone,
So I consider myself somewhat sensitive to the issue.
INSTALLATION
As others have pointed out………
Make sure you re-shape the heat shield so there is no contact ;
(if you don’t this could cause droning by vibrating the shield)
and make sure the pipe clears the small cross brace, just before
the mid-muffler.
Bang for the buck, this one of the best mods for the sedan.
1) cost; used pipe $100 or less.
2) If you want the added sexy sound of HKS add $400
3) weight saving; the sedan suitcase weighs a ton!
4) sound; incredible
5) performance;eliminates a bottleneck;
the OEM sedan mid has a pipe reducer then it changes back to full size at
some point inside the suitcase.
The car definitely feels like it is breathing easier with coupe midi.
I’ll see if I can get a couple of pics up tomorrow of the clearance issues
& the pipe size reducer on the OEM sedan midi

I installed the midpipe yesterday, and finally got a chance to test it out today. It's great. The sound alone is worth the $100. I'm not positive, but I think it did add a couple of horses too. I recommend this mod. I must have been lucky, I didn't have any clearance issues. Anyone done a dyno yet??

I mentioned earlier in this thread that I got the coupe mid pipe installed without the resonator which was a straight through design. I drove around in it all weekend and I hated the sound. Reminded me of my civic back in the days. Raspy and lots of drone.
I got it replaced it with the standard coupe mid pipe. It was a drastic improvement in sound quality. It now sounds like I would have hoped it to sound. Nice, mellow and deep with no annoying drone. I don't know if it was the louder sound, but it felt more powerful with the straight through design. Either way the power difference is very small and I am pleased with the results even if I did not gain any additional HP. It now sounds as good as it looks.

I think the y pipe + high flow cats are the way to go in addition to the coupe middy to drop some weight and make the sound a bit more sporty. Also the correct reducer/coupler that someone was selling for 22 bucks to keep turbulence down where the 3" diameter drop to 2.5" sound like the only way to go if installing the Y.
I saw on My350Z.com a 11 HP gain from y pipe and a aftermarket mandrel bent midpipe. Maybe the coupe midpipe should be ditched for something better if you want more than sound.
I bet the gains of a mandrel bent middy a new Y with proper reduction to 2.5" and a set of hi-flow cats is worth more than the stillen or injen catback system. Only problem is price is about the same for each setup. TIme for a trip to e-bay.

Installed my mid-pipe this pass weekend. Super easy.............had the WD-40 ready for the bolts but didn't need it. For the heat shield, with my hands, I just pushed it up alittle while the mid-pipe was in place. Being in place it gave me a visual on how much more clearance was needed. For the rubber hangers, I just unbolted them (2) from the frame mounts while still on the stock resonator. I did it this way because now I have more room to get it off with alittle WD-40. Also as we all know, the coupe's mid-pipe only requires one (1) rubber hanger. The drive shaft loop piece, which in my case touched the mid-pipe tubing. What I did was unbolted it and placed it on the ground. Then I placed a piece of wood on top and stepped on the wood so to flatten the bend just alittle. WARNING, JUST ALITTLE!!!!!!! so it will be able to fit back on the bolts.
Other then that is to mainly take your time, and don't forget those jack stands.
I strongly agree with ricmalaz, "the sound improvement alone is worth the mod"

I had my coupe midpipe put on this morning (thanks Truplay8!)
Here are my initial impressions:
- Really not that much louder, just a bit, but much deeper sound. Closer to the coupe (shocking isn't it).
- There is a tiny bit of droning around 2000 rpms. especially if you are in the back seat, but it is not irritating or real loud
- Seems just a bit better with low-end torque but that is probably placebo effect.
I like it. Much more aggressive sound but deep and not ricey at all. Just a growl. If you close the windows and didn't know, you wouldn't notice a big difference. It will definately pass the wife test (not just does it sound ok, but she will never even notice the change - but I sure do!!!)
I say thumbs up on the coupe midpipe.
Now, ztube is next.....

We made a deal, then I get a PM stating "somebody just offered me more $$$...what's your new offer" or something to that effect.
Not a way to do business.
