Thumbs up Finally got my midpipe - highly recommended

I finally got my coupe midpipe and installed in my 2003.5 Sedan 6MT yesterday morning. I love the new sound. There is more low end rumble and more of a gurgle when I let off the throttle. There is absolutely no drone or bothersome noise inside the cabin while driving. I have attached two sound clips, one for each midpipe. Also, I weighed each midpipe. Sedan - 36 lbs (and it feels like more), Coupe - 12 lbs. That's a 24 lb weight drop by doing the swap.

I would highly recommend this mod for anyone on the fence about it.

Ricmalaz, that sound freakin amazing! Thanks for being the first one to really put up a good clip of the midpipe. Mine is on the way! My friends ordered it for me two days ago! Yeah me and you!

Thanks!!! Wow, that side by side pic really shows the difference. I heard it was bigger by comparison, but that really shows it. Also, thanks so much for the sound clips. Hearing the real thing would be ideal, but this does help.

Where did you purchase from? Performance Nissan is the only place I've seen that has it available. What was shipping?

Any other install tips? Much has already been covered in the threads I've been reading and one concern was the heat shield. Any problems?

I plan to order in the next few weeks and have somebody lined up to help me install (on a lift). Been weighing options for near 9 months now, but the Borla/Stillen drone kept coming up. I really like this option for sound change while keeping it somewhat stock for now.

Thanks again

Thanks, it does sound awesome! I keep looking for an excuse to drive the car just so I can hear it again.

You're right, I did many searches but could not find sound clips of the original sedan vs. the coupe midpipe in the stock sedan exhaust. That's the main reason I posted. Hopefully it will help others make a more informed decision.

I took these with my Dell Axim X50v PDA positioned about 2.5 feet behind the muffler, about 1.5 feet high.

Nate -

I found a local guy on this board who had upgraded his coupe to an aftermarket exhaust. That is the cheapest way to go. I had been looking for a used midpipe for a couple months.

The only semi tough thing about the install might be getting the old exhaust off the rubber hangers. I would imagine if the temp. is cold this could be difficult. It was an 85 degree day here in Arizona when I did the swap, and I still had to use some dish soap on the hanger rods to pull them out of the rubber hangers. This took an extra 2-3 minutes. Otherwise, it is pretty straightforward. Remove the 2 nuts at each flange, pull out of the hangers. Clean up the metal gaskets (or install new ones), then with the new midpipe engage the flange studs, engage the single hanger rod, torque the nuts.

I did think the heat shield looked a little close at about 1/4" clearance, so I carfully moved it for another 1/8" clearance with a large flat blade screwdriver.

I had no problems. The whole job took about 30-45 minutes by myself.

Thank you ricmalaz for the useful write-up, actually perfect timing. I bought mine from Grubbs, according to Tim, it should be shipping out tomorrow 3/15. How I heard about it was from Dave O. He said they have a few laying around, left over from coupe exhaust installs, and that they were selling them for $100, including 2 new gaskets + shipping. When I bought mine they said they had 7 left, so if anyone else is interested and has no hook-up, you might want to give them a call.

Make sure you speak with X-man about the HKS plus coupe midpipe sound as it droned for him pretty bad, apparently. That's how I got my middy as he went back to stock and his HKS sounds like a ferrari now. One man's drone may be another mans music tho..
