Winter (Bad Weather) Traction Q.
Winter (Bad Weather) Traction Q.
Hi, I am a new member here,,,
Any one here had a bad experience with Snow/Rain traction trouble with G35?
Since I live in NY, I am little concerned with rear-wheel drive car like G35 (especially having last winter's snow)
Your answers will be differences choosing G35 as my next car.
Thanks!!

You'll need snowtires on both the Sedan or the Coupe. We're in the snowbelt up here bro, and these rear drivers aren't so good in winter conditions without them.

Re: Winter (Bad Weather) Traction Q.
I had Blizzaks on my Sedan, and were fine. A little more noise, and traction on dry and wet not so good but good in the snow.
On the Coupe I have Yokohama AVS and they're excellent. Not as much noise as the Blizzaks, and good all round performance.
You expecting to relocate to the snow belt?

Just trying to draw some more info out of you there.. your last post sounded kinda like RWD sucks in the snow, period. I would think that good winter tires and the VDC system could get you through just fine, though.

No, RWD doesn't 'suck' in the snow, but it's not as good as FWD as we all know. Have a go in the snow sometime, you'll know what I mean.

Re: Winter (Bad Weather) Traction Q.
"Not as good as" is relative, of course. On the BMW forums, one debate I've seen plenty of is AWD w/ all-season tires v. RWD w/ snow tires. Apparently, the AWD has an advantage in forward acceleration (more driven contact patch), but the RWD has the advantage in handling and braking (lighter weight, better balance). And if you ask me, in the snow, I'd be more concerned about turning and stopping than in going forward.
Of course, I'm just spitting back out what I read. I only visit the places that it snows, so we have a set of tire chains for the Jeep.

I did not have any trouble in the snow this past year with my G and I did not get snow tires. I am in Chicago and we were hit hard a couple of times and I ran fine through like 4-5 inches of snow. You just have to take your time and if you are used to driving in the snow it is not any trouble.

The big thing with RWD is starting out on icy hills. Since I have to travel down and back up the roads in the river valley daily, this becomes more of a concern. If the roads are grated and sanded, no problems even with A/S tires, but much more secure feeling with winter tires. EdRedS made it through last winter with only the stock Bridgestone A/Ss, but almost got stuck on an up ramp entering West Edmonton Mall and stuck only once or twice in really deep snow on ungrated residential streets.
Personally, I like driving RWD, even in the snow. More predictable handling IMO. With my Blizzak LMs, I was able to start out on slippery hills that FWD vehicles had difficulty with and the LMs don't compromise dry handling or traction which I found quite close to the stock RSAs.

Re: Winter (Bad Weather) Traction Q.
I got my G35S 6MT with winter sports package (=all-season tires) on March 11, so I missed most of the (Detroit area)winter. But we had a ice storm the morning of March 13. I drove to work on very slippery icy/slushy roads and the G35 actually felt more stable than my previous FWD Maxima. I think the car with the all-seasons combined with the VDC/TC will be fine.
I grew up driving RWD cars, never put winter tires on any of them. These included a Z28 Camaro and a 300ZX. Drove through the winters on the performance tires. Major downside was occasionally getting stuck.

Re: Winter (Bad Weather) Traction Q.
I think "it depends." Obviously, the VDC system is great at preventing the car from exceeding the available traction. However, on slick snow or icy surfaces, the only way to get more traction is to get winter tires. VDC won't help you get up a steep icy hill if your tires don't have anything to grip.. it'll just keep you from spinning the tires. Similarly, if you're moving along and have to panic stop, the VDC system can try to maintain control via ABS, but ultimately, stopping is a function of friction vs. inertia. Winter tires give you more traction (friction) on snowy/icy roads, and therefore will stop quicker as well. If there's no friction between the tire and the ground, there isn't an ABS system or Brembo in the world that can help.
I guess you'll have to be the judge of how much snow is in your area, and whether you can get by on all-seasons, or spring for a set of winter tires.
As for me, in SoCal, summer performance tires cover all the seasons. (Just gotta rub that in every now and then....)

Re: Winter (Bad Weather) Traction Q.
today's all seasons are better than the snow tires of the 80's.
i drove an 88 mercury cougar V8 around upstate new york with all season goodyears on it and had no problems. Of course I drove slower on slick roads, but in slush and loose snow today's all season's especially those goodyear aquatreads will do fine. No problems except for when i wanted to fishtail or 180/360 etc.

True. But what does that say for today's snow tires?
