Odd exhaust smell

I noticed during the winter that the exhaust on my 03.5 AT sedan smelled like rotton eggs. Not REALLY bad, but enough where I noticed it. Anyone have similar experiences? I know that some of the symptoms could have to do with fouled cats, incorrect timing, and/or crappy tuning. It seems that lately the smell has dissipated. The only other thought that I had was that gas companies put additives in the gas during the winter-- maybe that had something to do with it. I was using Hess 93 octane, and have since switched to Shell or Mobil (I have never put a drop of gas with less than 93 octane). Thoughts, experiences? Thanks

Not sure how accurate this info is, but........
I think this usually depends on the type gas used & the refining process.
If there is a higher sulpher content, you will get the rotten egg smell.

US was to have low Sulfur gasoline so that direct injection could be used but that keeps getting defered and defered...........as much of world cheap crude is high sulfur [aka sour crude].

Unfortunately most Japanese designs assummed low Sulfur by now. Not the 180ppm still allowed in many batches. The EPA allows averages not a absolute max so some 180ppm is dumped around US to blend down.

So that could be the reason why I was smelling the sulfer smell. I got a batch of gas that had higher sulfer content--or Hess is selling gas with a higher sulfer content. Because I smelled it on several occasions when I filled up. Does that seem logical?

Ahh the car fart. It might be my style of driving but I've experienced that phenomenon in many different cars. It seems to happen (though not repeatably) after the engine is under heavy load, say going up a steep highway, and then when I reach a less strenuous incline.

The drag is when you have passengers and everyone kind of looks at each other. It reminds me of a line from the Simpsons, Lenny to Homer, "You should see a doctor. Normal people shouldn't smell like that".

I have just 4500 on my '04 and it's happened a couple of times this winter.
