Break In Complete.. Finally.
Finished break-in this weekend - went on a road trip Saturday with the intent of not stopping until I was over 1200. Averaged 26 MPG for the trip, running between 68 - 75 with the air on.
Got to finally open her up and wind her out - had almost 1400 miles on her when I cracked her open on a roll and let her fly. What a great car. I don't know which is better - how she looks or how she sounds. Did gradual run-ups. No hard starts and no WOT until she was late into third going into fourth. She moves real nice...
I got well into triple digits and she was rock-steady, even with an occasional 15 knot quartering headwind/tailwind. No way to measure acceleration or guage performance except by the SOMP.
Oh - it was on an 8000 foot runway, not a public street. Did a few passes up and back to listen to the motor and feel the transmission shift while under a load. Very nice. The airfield was closed for rubber removal and re-striping.

Not an aviator, aviation maintenance guy. You couldn't pay me to fly in one of these things - I've been working on them for 24 years. LOL.
Yeah, it was a chance I couldn't pass up - kinda like this...
To show you how **** I am though - I drove the length of the strip twice in a sweeper truck before I brought the car out. Wanted to be sure there wasn't any crap out there that could take out a tire or what-have-you.
It was cool. At either end you could make a long sweeping turn (runway is 300 feet wide) and drift the car if you wanted to - I only did it a little - didn't want to waste the tires.. hehe..

I've been able to do it twice in 24 years. Once here (Texas) and once on Cecil Field, FL.
The runway at Cecil was 10 or 12,000 feet though - can't remember (flashing all the way back to the mid-80s now...getting hazy & hearing Loverboy music in my head...).
All I had to run on it was a Honda Accord. Not real impressive, but fun at the time.

Between 130 - 140.. I wasn't counting the tick marks - just a glance down toward the end of each pass before I let off. Could have gone faster - I was being careful.
As usual, I was being very conservative and slowing well in advance of the dash lines (ends). The surface is undergoing rubber removal and that can make things ugly (maybe a rut, maybe a slick spot, maybe a bump - that kind of stuff). I was staying in the sweet spot that I'd traveled in the sweeper - didn't want any surprises.
Come in on a decent roll from the taxiway, straghten her out, and then go like hell. Turn around, loop the taxiway, do it again.
