Re: 5AT Sedan vs 6MT Sedan

The automatic on the G35 is not exactly percise. I mean you shift and theres a nice lag before the car actually does shift. The only people you can point to that would suck at shifting would be those who bought a manual for the first time... I've been shifting my own cars for 12 years now. True each car is a little different and it takes awhile to get use to it. But within 3 months of driving a car, you learn all the in's and out's of the car...

You can easily lunch the 6MT at 2800 rpm's and accelerate quicker then the automatic which launchs at 1200 rpms? without eating up your clutch.

You guys with the granny transmissions can say what you want to make yourself feel better about having a automatic. bottom line is the 6mt is faster then the automatic...

Other then that both cars are awesome cars.... heck during my occasional drive in LA traffic I wish I had an automatic...

I'm not saying it to make myself feel better.

Heck, it's the biggest thing on the car that bugs me.. I wish it was more like BMW's Steptronic. Faster shifts, and a sport mode, and a true "I want this gear, don't go up OR down" manual mode.

An SMG would be nice....

Next car, I'm probably going back to a stick.

In the meantime, my cupholders are better than yours.

I have driven the 915 gearbox(do you know what that is?) for 15 years and I do know quite a bit about them there "shifter type cars". I don't need to make myself feel better. I know that until you spend time with the auto your answer will always be "its slow" or "it lags". Please keep thinking that it makes it more fun for those of us in the autos when your jaw drops.

Re: 5AT Sedan vs 6MT Sedan

I owned a 98 prelude with a automanual, had it for two years before I sold it to my brother and got myself a 2000 prelude with a manual transmission... reason I did that was because I wanted more performance and the autostick was laggy. You shift and its like a good full second before the car would actually shift. I also wanted to add some mods and knew without some serious modifications to the tranny the autostick would not be able to handle the incrase in HP and Torque.

There are several messages on here from guys with automatics that complain about the lag and lack of performace with the automatic. So it is a common problem among these types of transmissions...

Does the Automatic take away the fun of driving a G35? Hell no, its still a fun car to drive even with the automatic.

Does the Automatic take away the fun when racing it at the track? In my opinion, Yes.

Since probably 90% of people who buy G35's will never race them, the automatic is perfect for them.... I was only joining the conversation regarding weather or not the the automatic was as fast as the manual. In my opinion its not.

Another point I dont think anyone else brought up was that with the extra gear in the manual, you get lower gearing which helps in the 1/4 mile...

As for the 6.1 seconds that a few of the magazines recorded for the automatic G35, I would imagine that got that time by pushing on the brakes or using the emergency brake while they rev the engine to get a quicker take off. The other times i've seen for the automatic G35 of around 6.6 secs seems more likely in the real world...

Oh yea, just to make it clear, I don't think a Automatic G35 is a slow car, its still one of the fatest cars in its class. And the Manual only adds about 0.5' seconds in the 0-60 tests.. So the difference is pretty small. but its still fun to argue it anyways

Both cars are BAD ***. I have had too many people tell me that an auto won't hang and have proved them wrong but thats not the point here-we got to do some good ol' fashioned ribbing. I hope your mods do what you want at the track. Thats does seem to be where you are going and rightly so, the G needs to show it stuff in competition. Make us all proud!!!!
