01 S4 vs 05 G35 sedan
Hey guys! I just bought me a Silver, 05 G35 6MT sedan with the aero/premium pacakage a couple weeks ago and I love it (sometimes I make excuses just to drive it around)!
I was just wondering about your opinions on a 01 S4 vs 05 G35 race. Both manual and both stock. Would the G35 be able to hang with the S4? Has anybody raced one? and fwiw, I didn't just buy it to go out and beat on it, I was just curious on how competitive they are against each other.

They are pretty much neck-and-neck...
The S4 might have a slight edge on launch due to AWD, but the G35 should have a slight edge in acceleration after the launch...
I believe the best stock S4s ran low 14s in the quarter... and the 2005 6mt G35 is probably slightly faster than that.

Many B5 S4's have a simple K04 turbo upgrade and a chip which puts the power at over 440hp.
Think twice about running against any older S4.
Stock S4s aren't that terribly quick. They're not slow by any means, but like any other AWD car, they're very dependant on a higher rpm clutch-abusive launch to achieve good acceleration times. The S4 has 250hp, weighs 3600lbs, and is spinning two extra halfshafts, driveshaft, and transfer case. That's a lot more drivetrain drag to overcome than just RWD. On paper, typical times for a stock S4 are 14.4s@97mph and that's with a 4500-5000rpm clutch drop launch. If you launch the car at too low of an rpm, the grip of AWD will bog the car and cause much slower upper 14 second performance. The chances of finding someone willing to put their S4 through this kind of abuse or finding someone who even knows how to launch these cars is a rarity. I see plenty of S4s in Kansas City driven by 50+ owners and I'm sure most of those cars are stock. Even the owners of chipped S4s are more than often resistant to launching these cars hard because the clutch is a weak point and is quite pricey to replace. A stock S4 traps through the 1/4 mile in the 96-98mph range. Trapspeed shows available power and acceleration. Most 6MT G35s are seeing 97-100mph in the 1/4 mile. That means the G35 6MT is making more power and is accelerating harder through the 1/4 mile. The G35s problem lies in getting off the line effectively.
With that said, I think running a stock S4 would be a driver's race with the nod going to the G. I know that if a stockS4 challenged me at the strip, I wouldn't be terribly worried and I drive a basically stock auto.

My last car was a chipped 2001 S4 (6MT), and now I drive a G35X (5AT).
That race would be ugly. I haven't had the G to a track, but the S4 ran a 13.2 at a notoriously "slow" track, without what I would consider a great launch.
A stock S4 vs. a 6MT G35 would certainly be closer. But as has been said, most people who would be interested in racing have probably done a chip, since it is such an easy mod. So if one comes looking for you, as they say "be afraid, be very afraid"

Hey - does anybody know if an S4 can be upgraded with a chip?
Anybody?
Reading this thread was like listening to a broken record. He stated in his post that both cars were stock. I'm betting he already has the particular S4 in mind, maybe a friends...

Please forgive the digression.
Speaking from the experience of my previous car and test driving several G35's; stock, with a 6MT in both cars, the S4 is faster. If it isn't straying too far off topic to give an explanation, I believe it is due to the broad torque curve that the twin small turbos allows.

there's a good article on car and driver about the (i believe it's an '01 as the article was published in october '01) s4. they ran it to 60 in 5.5 seconds. my guess is the sedan would lose but it might be close.
