New G35S owner

Hey folks, just thought I'd pop in and introduce myself as a new G35 sedan owner. Well actually the car is for my fiancee but whenever we go out together we take her car and I drive. I wanted to get some opinions on the deal that we made for our G35 and see if it was decent or if we got hosed. Ours is a pre-owned silver 2003 model (not .5) with black leather, wood trim, navigation (neat toy), and premium package (sunroof/xenon/etc). The car had 16,000 miles on it and was a year old when we bought it. Our price was $31,700 before taxes and such. What's the verdict?

Re: New G35S owner

depends on the overall condition of the car.. brand new, msrp for that package would be somewhere around 37K almost 38K .. i don't know what the depreciation is on this car.. i would assume low 30's would be a good deal..

First off...Congrats on the G35 purchase. Try to get your fiancee on the forum as well. There are a few other G35 ladies who also love this forum and it's members. In terms of the verdict, I'm not too sure since you are from the States. Someone else could probably help you with that. Good luck with the car!!

It's still a G thang!!

Re: New G35S owner

Oh, I guess I should have mentioned the condition too but the car was pristine. If I hadnt seen the milage on the car I would have sworn the car was brand new. The car still had the plastic wrap over the floormats. I checked over the wheels one by one and none of the lips were marred at all. The paint felt like it was waxed regularly. The only flaw that I found was a small chip in the front fascia. It looked like the previous owner loved this car. He didnt even put on the front license plate so it still has the flat cover. I'm guessing a nice chunk of the milage was highway since I noticed a few of their previous destinations on the navigation system was out of state. Apparently they traded it in to get a new FX.

Unfortunately the lady isnt much into cars but she still loves her new G35. I'm pretty much the car nut in the family with a highly modified 300ZX turbo. I do drive a G but it's an old G20. It does the job of getting me around town and hauling parts for my 300 surprisingly enough.

Hey! Congrats on the "new" G, I'm sure you both will have plenty of fun driving it at your own pace .

Couple things... this was not such a great deal, I don't think you took enough depreciation on a car that was 1) a year old, 2)already had 16k miles on it. The invoice on your build (you didn't mention sport pkg or winter pkg) for a new 2003.5 would have been about $32,800; with people paying about $500-$800 over invoice on sedans these days, you could have gotten a similar new G for about $33,500 (saved about $1,800 by going with a used one). Hey, hind sight is usually 20/20....

Regarding the Nav, (need Arnold Schwarzenegge voice here) "It - is - not - a - toy". Any technology that can guide a cruise missle to the right building, the right floor, and the right window, is not a toy... people also tend to forget what a great safety feature it is, guide you to your destination with as little hassle as possible. If you use the system often, especially trying to find addresses (or just parking for that matter) in large unfilimiar cities, you quickly find out just how useful this toy can be... That's why I believe once people use a Nav system they're likely to want one on their next car.

Re: New G35S owner

Well I did spec out an identically equipped 2003.5 model and it actually came out to be a bit under $36k from Infiniti's web site. I'm not sure exactly how the 2003 models were equipped/priced as far as option packages go so I thought it was a pretty decent deal that we got since it dropped about $4000.

That's right... Infiniti's website quotes you the MSRP, which would have been about $36,200 for this configuration on a new G.

That just shows you the difference between Invoice ($32,800) and MSRP ($36,200). The only folks paying close to MSRP on a sedan right now are the ones getting 6MTs, or some other really rare combo (don't know of any), otherwise they're paying much closer to Invoice... sorry.

Hey... whether or not you got a good deal at this point is moot. There's nothing you can do to change that.

Your fiancee has a great car, with brand prestige and lots of features, that will be largely problem-free for as long as you own it. Also standard comes a bucket-load of grins whenever you step on the gas! That's a lot of pluses to focus on...forget the price.

Now get out there and start enjoying this car!

true.. we shouldn't be talking or arguing about how good a deal we got or not after the fact... it would've been more useful if asked before the purchase.. otherwise, you just might end up feeling bad that you paid too much or whatnot.. just enjoy the G and don't worry about it..

Re: New G35S owner

I guess they arent dealing too much in my area. The 3 dealers I visited seemed to be giving about 500-800 off MSRP. Of course this was actually about 2 months ago when we bought it. Oh well, I'm still happy with the purchase overall. Shopping for a 'prestige' brand car is a lot different than buying a 'regular' car even between same manufacturers like Nissan/Infiniti. The important thing is that she loves her car and I know it'll be reliable for her. I just hope it lasts 10 years like her 93 Maxima did. The less I spend on her car means the more I can spend for my own car addict....er, hobby.

Re: New G35S owner

I lucked out in that I found this website and FreshAlloy before I bought so I was able to get an idea of pricing. So even though I got a 6MT, I was able to knock off nearly $3k off the MSRP with the knowledge of the deals people were getting. In fact, I got the exact same car as you only it's a 6MT and I paid $32,900.

Obviously it's too late for you but the next car you get, don't buy until you post your question on a forum.

Re: New G35S owner

I just made a deal to order an '04. Since exact pricing has yet to be determined, the dealer suggested 1% over invoice. I ordered a fully optioned car, but this should still be less than $400. You people have to remember that even at invoice, a dealer still makes money. Car companies give the dealer extra money to compensate them for the financing costs of keeping a vehicle on their lot for a few months. This is called the "holdback". So as long as a dealer unloads a car promptly, they can make (on a G) $400-500 even selling at invoice. While considering the G sedan, I also looked at a Evo VIII, and the Mitso dealer told me you could buy anything on their lot, (except the Evo of course) for below invoice. BTW, I finally talked a Mitso dealer into a test drive, and I was very unimpressed. First of all, you'd need a kidney belt to drive one regularly, and second, it was incredibly cheap feeling overall. Not as quick feeling as I expected either. I live near NY City, and given the poor roads, I think I could make faster A-B trips in the G....driving the Evo as fast as capable would be too painful, and probably tear it to bits over a couple of years.

Yeah, speed means nothing if you can't stand driving at that speed. I've followed two souped up Integra's at 100+mph and while their engine droning was getting on their nerves, my G was cruising in bearable comfort. Getting jiggy with my Bose as a matter of fact instead of have my interior stripped down to the bare minimum.
