Re: widest width wheels on a 4 door???

The problem is that the sedan's VDC system is not designed to handle offset wheel sizes. If you have tires with a larger diameter in front or back, the VDC system may mistake this for wheel slippage, and activate the ABS breaks to "correct" the problem. You don't want that. To avoid that, your tires need to have the exact same diameter. This is best accomplished with same size tires.

With those rim sizes, I assume you're looking at something like 245/35R20 front and 285/30R20 rear. In this case, the diameter of the two tires is very, very close, but not quite exact. I do not know if this would be "close enough."

Another thing you may want to look into is replacing your VDC computer with the coupe's VDC computer. I'm not sure if this is possible, or how much it costs, I've simply heard the suggestion mentioned before. If this works, then you just need to have whichever axle contains the speed sensor to be reasonably close to the diameter of the stock 215/55R17 tires. Both sizes mentioned above are close to the stock diameter.

One other problem is that Infiniti recommends tires no wider than 225 on the front axle in order for the tires to clear the suspension components. Many people are successfully running 235's and 245's however. I imagine Infiniti is erring on the side of caution, but it's something to be aware of.

maybe it's me, but it doesn't sound like you read the post above.... you're going to have to use the same size tires on both front/rear to avoid engaging the ABS braking system. :P

Re: widest width wheels on a 4 door???

I have 245's all the way around, but with 45mm offset's. The front has the greatest clearance limitation's. I have about 5mm clearance between the tire and suspension arm. Going with 40mm offset would buy you more clearance from the suspension, but move you closer to the front fender lip. So 255's might work with 40mm offset, but then again they might rub on the fender lip when the suspension set's compressed for whatever reason.

BTW, you can stuff a 275 width in the rear. Their is a sedan owner here or on freshalloy that his pics of the setup, but if you don't get the offset just right, you'll rub someplace or other. I would think it would take a high offset over 40mm for the rear. Sedan and coupe offset needs are NOT the same.

maybe it is me, but it sounds like you didn't read. i aked where the VDC is and i also said not considering in the VDC thing how wide can i go. :P

so this other person is running a wider set up on his 4 door. has he had any VDC problems that have been noted by others saying that it happens?

Re: widest width wheels on a 4 door???

I replied to you, the creator of this thread. I'm not going to explain my position on the "rumored" effect on the sedan concerning running wider rear tires may or may not have on VDC. What you have are a bunch of people that heard something from so and so and so on. I especially liked the one I read someplace that said if you run different tread compound's, your VDC won't function right. What you will not see is a sedan driver that is running wider rears having made a post where he confirms the issue. So my post was driven to help you as best I can, not to conform to unconfirmed facts. I will let you use your own judgement, without prejudice from me.

When my rear tire's wear out, I will be running wider rears on my car. Know one thing for certain, if their is a VDC issue, I will find out about it in short order and will post accordingly.

Re: widest width wheels on a 4 door???

Hey, chill out everyone. Gsedan35, I don't think he was griping at you, but at the person he quoted, and that is the person who apparently didn't read my post fully.

As for the VDC system, I was repeating heresy from older threads on this forum. I don't know if the coupe's system can be put on the sedan, or how you would go about doing it, just pointing out an avenue of research you can persue. You may want to see if your local Infiniti service tech has any helpful information -- the worst thing they can do is just say no, which may or may not be truthful.

With the standard VDC system, the only important point is tire diameter (or revolutions per mile, same basic concept). How close does it have to be to keep the VDC system happy? I don't know. What happens if the VDC system isn't happy? It will detect the smaller tires spinning faster than the larger tires, assume the wheels are slipping, and apply the brakes to those wheels (and blink the SLIP light on the dash). It shouldn't be dangerous, but will most likely cause reduced gas mileage and premature brake wear, possibly stress some other parts.

Is this for every-day driving or track use only? If it's for track use only, then you have the option of just shutting off the VDC system when you put those tires on -- you don't want VDC on the track anyway, it engages too often on tight corners. If it's for every-day driving, this is still an option, but I know I'd forget to shut it off quite often, and be half-way to work before realizing it.

Re: widest width wheels on a 4 door???

Hey Gsedan...I did not saying anything negative about what you said??? Your info was very helpful. I am in the same boat as you...I would like to get to the bottom of this and find out if it is true or not. I would like to get a staggered set up. Gazing through the rides section I noticed quite a few sedans with a staggered set up and haven't heard any complaints, so...???? I have no clue on what to go by. Are you going to run the same width rims and just stagger the tires on your set up? I have my mind made up on which wheels to get...either 19" volk 57f pros or 20" intro forged wheels. I am going to run 245's up front and 275's in the rear. Now hopefully nothing goes wrong. To bad either of the wheels I order this week won't be here for sometime from now.
Thanks

I have 18x9's on the rear with a 38 offset. It makes the 245's quite happy on the back......
