And yep, it's just marketing, they try and stand out. I liked Colin's explanation of the names, good call sir! LOL, M45, Mucho as in Mucho dinero!
I love Chicago. Was my first concert when I was 12. I think they were on 21 then (still have that cassette too!). It was right after the movie Days of Thunder came out and they had a song in the movie.

Ok I love trivia - what was the first hit?

Actually, it's more likely the X stands for 4x4/AWD. Hence FX35/45, QX56, G35x and M35x.

Infiniti, Mercedes, and Lexus uses the alphabet so that the lower the letter, the higher the class. Acura seems to have no pattern.

As someone else pointed out, the numbers generally point to the displacement of the engine (rounded up), but not always. The new Lexus RX400h has (I believe) the same 3.3 liter as the RX330, but the electric engine makes it perform more like a 4.0 liter engine. So car designations are becoming more like computer processor designations where the number is more of a relative performance indicator than the actual displacement. In the new BMW 3-series, the 330 and 325 both have a 3.0 liter engine.

The new 750 is a 4.8 liter.
C230s are actually 1.8 liters.
They are playing with my mind.

Man, I'm sorry I got this off topic here, but the first "hit" was "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?", although, IMO "I'm A Man" should have been the first. I saw them first in '69, the venue had many empty seats, the next year they played the same place, tickets sold out right away!
