Does Anyone Know?

hey guys...my wife asked me a question I couldn't answer today?

What does the "G35" stand for?

She laughed and said "you Mr. Wheel, Mod expert!!! and you don't know???"
Anyway, I changed the subject and of course did not admit she was right.

Does anyone know?

I hate it when she makes a good point and I have nothing to come back with.

i would think it may be because it's a gt and has a 3.5 liter engine...hence, 350gt in japan, 240z = 2.4liter, 350z = 3.5 liter, 300zx = 3.0 liter engines. similarly, bmw's are named in that fashion too.

hahah yeah... it means you have to be a G and you have to be at least 35 to ride. Seriously....The G is just a letter they distinguish the car with and the 35 stands for the 3.5 liter engine. Go back and tell your wife who wears the pants in the house again! haha

I'm thinking about the letter selection by Infiniti though.. G, J, I, M, Q. Any particular reason for those?

okay..when infiniti introduced the new G in 2003, was it meant to be a replacement of the old G20's because the G35's are alot bigger...don't seem to be same class.

Sometimes letter don't have to have meanings...its could be an alphabetical line up of cars of the same brand...tell her that until you find the answer

the letter doesnt mean anything is just "G" class w/ 3.5 ltr engine. Same as the M45 and M35 they are both in the "M" class one if 4.5 the other is 3.5 ltrs.

It designates the series of the car. Kinda like 3 5 and 7 series for BMW. The second two numbers tell you the size of teh engine.

Just like what do the A, C, E, S, M, G classes from Mercedes mean?

I have feeling that Infiniti is using Mercedes-Benz' naming scheme, e.g. C230

One does not have to read many posts here to recognize this as being a truism.

I remember a long time ago a buddy of mine who's father owned a Mercedes dealership telling me that the S meant "Saloon", the C meant "Coupe", and the E meant "Economy". That was several years back, though, and he may have been talking out of his @ss.

The letter designation for Infiniti could just be marketing. Nissan may just have decided that the letters they have chosen sound right, if that makes any sense. Kind of like how they select any car model name- if it sounds "right" they roll with it. Just my two cents.

You're correct. In Mercedes' case, the letters do have meaning. But you had a small mistake there:

C class - Compact (not coupe)
E class - Economy
S class - Saloon

L - luxury upgrade for existing model such as ML - the super luxury SUV of the M SUV models, and SL for the S series (not sure about that one though)

There is no 'super luxury' version of the M SUV---they're all just called ML's....The 'L' was placed there out of respectto BMW's M series (motor trend article when the ML first came out in 97)

Also, the 'K' in SLK and CLK are supposed to mean that they're "kompact" versions of the CL and SL. (can't remember where I read this, maybe Top Gear?)
