In my experience, winter modes normally have the auto trans start in second gear. Vehicles with VDC or similar may see that device provide even more "help".
What I'd like to see for our G35 Automatics is proper sport sedan/sport coupe "kick butt" auto trans control. In "sport mode", the engine would run to redline in every gear when in the "D" (drive) postion. In manual, a move of the short throw lever would result in an instant gear change up or down.
