Got a speeding ticket

today was coming back fm mt charleston and hitting 80-85 on an empty road ... shopt there was a cop coming fm opposite direction and he turned arnd and put his lights on ... he gave me 150 dollars fine and said there is no points as it wont be reported to DMV because he was a federal trooper and not a state one -- what does that mean ? any idea guys, also while handing me over the ticket he asked me for my SSN for identtification purpose , although i did not want to give but had no choice .... had got couple of speeding tickets earlier but never cop asked me for my SSN number -- any idea why

Any lawyers out there? I was under the impression that it was illegal to require a SSN for identification purposes...

Goober and Joe-Bob are back at the Ponderosa drinking beer they bought with your 'fine.'

Are you even sure this guy was a cop?

This sounds awfully suspicious to me. Unless you can verify that it was legit, I would check all your credit cards and run a credit report to see if anyone has applied for credit in your name. I have never heard of a law enforcement officer asking for a SSN at a traffic stop. Can you verify the officer's legitimacy by calling the agency that issued the ticket? There should be a number or other identifier on the ticket for the issuing officer.

I checked the ticket -- its from Central Violations Bureau -- checked the web site and verified that such tickets are issued in places like national park, national forest etc , which makes sense as i got the ticket in a place called mt charleston.

Even the website says that the ticket should be maied to Atlanta and thats what the ticket also says.

Should i call the agency and check for the ticket ..

That sounds fine. Make sure you pay it on time or they will really make your life miserable if it was on federal property. I know of someone who ignored a ticket he got in a Federal Park and they issued a bench warrant and the next time he was stopped he regretted it plus they fined his *** even more.
