Powder Coated Wheels - Update

A while back I posted pics of a horribly bad powder coat color on my wheels... didn’t turn out at all what I expected. A week later I had them re-done and they are exactly what I was looking for. There was a huge delay in getting the center caps color matched; I won't bore you with the details... This will tied me over 'till the rubber wears and I get after market rims & tires.

Next week the door trim and handles are getting powder coated (I hope all goes smoother than the wheels did).

I have attached before and after pics (low resolution for file size to fit, they actually look better in person, but the pics give you the idea). Let me know what you think ~ Thanks

MUCH BETTER and congrats on getting them taken care of. This was bugging you (if I remember correctly) and I'm glad to see you got it resolved.

I'd be interested to see a high-res shot with nice color so we can really tell the effect you achieved - kinda hard to be sure from the low res.

Between these and the original PC I'd say these look 10X better.

Any trouble at all with the PC removal and reshoot? What did the evolution end up costing you, if you don't mind sharing?

I had this happen on a previous car, got a bad first powder coat. Ended up costing me almost $500 for the whole deal. The color you found looks really good, looks like the OEM color you see on some Lexus IS and ES's as well as the Nissan Trucks.

hmmm....it's better but I still think the OEM color looked better. Not sure what you're trying to do.

Thanks for the replies... I'll try to answer all above in this one post... 1st PC job was $230 + 150 wheel dismount, remount balance and car storage for 1.5 days, second time around PC was $180 + 100 dismount/remount/bal one day storage. So all in all it cost $660 for something that should have been more like $350 (oh well).

Removing previous PC was no issue - chemically stripped just like they did when the wheel was stock for first go-around (cost was included in above $).

As far as looking like stock color... not at all. In person you can tell much more than in these pics. It's much darker, more of a gunmetal or anthracite color. The powder coat color is "Hyper-Black Chrome" even though admittedly it doesn’t look at all like black chrome.

In response to better resolution pics for more clarity, I really wish I could post higher res!!! Everyone does, but we are limited to something like 200kb files sizes. I don't know how to take high res pic and change the file size to fit. On my camera (and most I’ve used) high resolution ends up being way too big file size for this site... If anyone has suggestions, I will try. I suppose I could use some kind of photo bucket, but I’ve never done that and not sure how. These pics were taken on an overcast day (it's been overcast in the mornings in So Cal this week - weird). I can take pics when it’s sunny and you might see more of the real effect.

To answer "what look I'm going for" - I'm getting rid of all chrome and "bright" exterior. Just don’t like it. Trying to be different from other Gs on the road... Going dark – some people call it “black out” even though I’m not making anything truly black. All emblems are black chrome, lenses have smoked overlays, just order upper and lower Billet grilles that will be PC with all door trim and handles next week.

There are some cool things people have done to their G's but I haven’t seen one that looks like this will when it's done. I'm sure it's one of those love it or hate it things... some people say the really like the idea, some say it's not for them. Isn’t that the deal with just about every appearance mod?...

Thanks again for the responses, I'll post pics of the grill and door trim after they are powder coated (in case anyone is interested).

~Mike

Right on - thanks... I'll try to take some tomorrow. If I re-size in Microsoft Camera and Scanner Wizard will that affect how the image is displayed here? I guess the file size would be smaller, but is the image displayed smaller too?

Sorry for the newbie type questions, I don't do a lot of pics... just quick easy stuff. Also, not trying to make this a Photoshop forum - sorry.

That is an idea... it brings up a point that has been a problem - The molded rubber on the belt strip has delayed the door trim project. Originally I wanted to powder coat it until I realized the rubber is molded and cannot be removed. I looked into anodizing, it is questionable. Because I am tired of researching and waiting I am going to paint it.

How does this relate to painting the mirror plastic? Since it is black and the vertical side molding is black, I will probably paint the belt molding black to tie it all together. If I painted the mirror shroud body color it would make the rest look a little awkward (for what I'm doing).

Thank you for the suggestion though
