Has anyone had any issues with rust?

Hey everyone - I know our cars have a corrosion warranty, but I was wondering if anyone has had to use it? My car has a couple deep paint chips that have developed rust (they were there when I bought it) and I am in the process of dealing with the dealer to see what they'll do. Just wondering if anyone's had a similar issue and what your resolution was?

Thanks.

Picus112, If those chips are a result of poor paint process (and we all know how good Nissan paint is.... ) then it should be covered.
If they are a result of road debris or stone chips etc, then the warranty says no coverage.

You say those chips were there when you got the car.......Did you buy it new from the dealer, or was it second hand?
I'm not sure that fact would make any difference since if the chips are flaws, then you should be covered anyway.

I would talk to the dealer and explain. I would think if he could make a claim for you, he would do it.

Have you got any pics you can post?

G/L

Colin

Heya Colin - I actually took the car in this morning for an oil change and talked to the body shop guy when I was there. The spots with rust were rock chips (I knew that already) so they weren't covered, but in the interest of good faith they cleaned out the rust, treated with a rust converter, and prepped them for touch-up (I said I'd like to do that part myself), so all is well. I'm pretty good at touch ups so I'm good to go now, just hadn't dealt with rust before.

The car was bought used and it's likely the chips were there, but hadn't rusted yet. I actually posted over in detailing about how I got a good deal on the car because of the condition the paint was in. Since I've been detailing for a few years I knew I could save myself some $ and fix it up myself, I just didn't realize the chips were down to the metal, so I didn't touch them up right away - my own fault. It took me a few weekends but except for these three chips (the ones with rust) the paint is now in perfect shape.

It was nice to see the dealer going out of there way for a new-ish customer. Props to them, and thanks to you for the reply.

Picus112,

Could you show us some pics of the spots before you touch them up? I would like to see how well the new paint will blend in with the old paint.
I have a ding on the corner of my roof and its starting to rust. I never thought I could ever get a ding on the roof. Someone must have threw a stone at my car from a roof or something like that. What a pain in the a$$!!!
What dealership did you deal with? Yorkville?

Heya. Actually I just filled the spots in, doh! I do have one that hasn't been filled though, it's tiny but I will try to get some pictures. Spot repairs can be a pain, but if you take your time and aren't freaked out by sanding your paint, they can turn out really awesome.

I deal with Agincourt Nissan/Infiniti, btw.

I'll get some pics of my one remaining spot later, and in 2 days I'll follow up with a pic of it filled in.

OK here is a picture of my chip. Sorry for the poor quality, the car is in my garage so I had to use a flash etc... it's on the gas tank lip as you can see. It has been cleaned and primed. To clean I use one of those prep pens from Canadian Tire, it's like a pen with little glass rods that you twist in the chip to remove dirt, rust, whatever. I then primed with a primer pen and will touchup with a touchup pen later tonight.

Here is a chip that I am 80% done on to give you an idea of how they turn out.

Here is is right after cleaning/priming/filling with touchup. As you can see it's an ugly blob.

Here it is after wetsand + polish.

That's from ~half an inch away. You can't see it unless you're an inch from the paint. When I polish next odds are it will completely disappear.

Here is a 100% repair that was kind of rough but just want to show you what can be done.

That's my fender, down to the sheet metal. Previous ownder must have brushed a wall or something. Cleaned, primed, touchup, clear, wetsand with 2000 then 1500 grit, polish with SSR2.5 =

Before:

After:

A good place to get a quick how-to on repairs like this is here:

If you need any help let me know!

picus -- Great link, Thanks! Do you polish like they suggest with Klasse All-In-One and P21S Carnauba wax?

PIcus112,

I deal with Agincourt also.
I'll have to get over there soon to pick up some touch-up paint. We should meet up one day. I would like to check out your detailing equipment.
I'm a little scared to wet sand since I've never done it before.
I have the little pen from Cdn Tire. I used it on my last car.
Did you get the touch-up paint from the dealer or some where else? How did it match up to the cars paint?

B.

Nah - that's just their suggestion, although Klasse and P21S are both awesome products. I really only use Klasse to clean now, not to polish so much. There are about a million different polishes and waxes you can use. On that pic above I have a couple layers of Z2-Pro with some Nattys blue wax on top of it. I used Poorboys SSR2.5 and SSR1 to polish out the marring then polish to a shine.

We should meet up, although my equipment isn't that impressive. Just a bunch of product and a PC really. PM me and we will figure something out.

Wet sanding can be a bit intimidating but it's actually really easy if you just go slow and cautiously. 2000 grit sandpaper is *super* fine, so as long as you don't press too hard the marring polishes right out.

I did get the paint from the dealer, it was $12.95 and on one end you have the matched paint and on the other you have the clear coat. It applies via a little felt tip pretty easily. I use a toothpick for smaller chips. It matched up perfectly, they took my vin and gave me a pen that is the same color as the factory paint. On some of the chips I didn't even bother with the clear since it was matched without it.
