How did nissan/Infiniti restrict Sedans to 260 hp?

I know the 05 and up have the same hp, but us poor 03, 03.5 and 04 guys only have 260 hp. How did they restrict the G sedan? Is it just ECU "de-tuning" and ****ty exhaust or something more like cams etc? I would like to know if there is free "hidden" horsepower that can be unleashed for a decent price....

Thanks!

KC

There have been some long threads discussing the "supposed" 260 hp rating of the Sedan (try a search). The conclusion based on dyno's is that the Sedan was underrated.

It would appear, based on the dyno information submitted here and on other VQ35-related websites, that the primary way that Nissan/Infiniti "restricted" the power on pre-2005 sedans was with a keystroke on their keyboard, striking a "6" instead of an "8" when submitting their "official" stats for publication.

I have a 2005 6mt sedan, and I am more liely to think that the 2005 is OVERRATED on power.

This is the weakest 300 hp car I have ever driven.

the 1/4 mile timeslips of most of these cars proofs it.These cars should be hitting 100 trap speeds int he 1/4 mile but those timeslips are few and far between!!!

I've owned both the 2003 and now the 2005. The cars are like night and day. Not just the cosmetics but also the handling and HP.

I am not going to argue with anyone here, 'cause I agree with everybody's opinions.

I think part of the HP improvement came from the new exhaust design in the '05 which is IMHO amazing for an OEM.

Other than that, I can't say for sure what else made a difference.

Motor Trend 8/02
2003 G35 sedan 5AT, premium, Sports package
260hp/260tq

0-60 6.2

1/4 MPH 95.7mph

Motor Trend 1/03
2003 G35 sedan, premium, Sports package
260hp/260tq

0-60 6.5

1/4 MPH 97.1mph

Motor Trend 9/05
2005 G35 sedan, premium, Sports package
280hp/270tq

0-60 6.5
1/4 ET 14.7
1/4 MPH 95.9mph

Looks to me like the 03/04 G35 was making 280hp/270tq all along. It also explains why my 03 5AT with just a Z-pipe pulls 14.4/14.5 and 97/98mph.

The only real exhaust change was with the resonator in the midpipe. It's half the size of the 03/04 resonator........and I want it A muffler hanger was changed too, but I doubt that adds much power.

Muffler is larger on the 05 as well. Diameter of the piping is also larger.

If that's the case then why are people with 05s running coupe midpipes?

I discovered that and changed back to my OEM set up. I had the coupe mid pipe + HKS and found absolutely no difference in sound with the coupe midpipe alone. The HKS added a deeper and slightly louder sound level but no HP gains.

I had also lost back pressure with that set up and had slight droning. Changing back was the best thing for me.

For any '05 getting a coupe midpipe is pointless.

The muffler inlet pipe is bigger than the 03-04 inlet. It has been measured already and verified. The exact #'s right now I do not recall, but it was as much as 1/4 of a inch difference.

i guess the 05 6mt also has to variable EXHAUST valve timing?
but well, i gotta agree with you guys that they revised that the
exhaust such that the midpipe is no longer "that" restrictive
and a slightly larger muffler inlet.

Cheers,
godmans
