Your mileage sounds pretty normal for the driving (if you can call it that) conditions you have and the distance you travel.

The A/C fan speed you run at will not affect your mileage other than a low speed will potentially use more energy. Running at low speed the compressor will be running all the time since the cabin air will not not get sufficiently cooled unless outside temps are lowand/or it's a cloudy day also.

As we all know gas is injected into the engine upon acceleration. The harder you accelerate the more fuel the injectors are going to inject in the engine. So it's simple... shift atleast before 3000rpm and you should see a definite increase in mpg. The a/c hurts a little but try it on like 68 level 2. I'm only 19 so i like to drive around like a maniac too but i'm trying to cut back seeing as i only got 220 miles out of my tank a few weeks ago and lets just say gas isnt cheap here in So Cal. I've been shifting around 2000-2500 and im gettin 18 mpg now and the engine is still breaking in. Good luck.

16 to 17mpg is normal here too. I've done far worse as well....depends on how late I am ......lol. And, I DO ride a bike in the summer. That's why my 04' just hit 8,600 mi.

Quote: The last few tank fulls I've been recording my miles per gallon and I've been averaging a pathetic 12 MPG. My car is a 2003.5 6mt with about 10,000 miles. I've owned it from the start by have never really cared about MPG until the recent gas increases.

I drive the car everyday. On the weekdays it is 100% city driving. My drives are only 5 miles long and it takes 1/2 hour to cover that distance. Back and forth thats 10 miles a day for 5 days = 50 miles. In the evening I also drive at the farthest 3 miles, but the trafic isn't as bad. On the weekends its more short trips of about 2-3 miles, all in city traffic. I'd estimate that my percentage is 95% city / 5% highway. Also I blast my A/C everytime I drive, usually 65 degrees at fan level 3. I also drive very aggressively. Shift at 4000-5000 rpm regularly.

So does my driving behavior explain my terrible gas milage? This week I'm going to try keep the A/c at 70 fan level one, and try to shift at 2000-2500 rpm
In the conditions you describe, 12 mpg sounds about right.
