G35 Sedan vs BMW 3 Series Sedans

In reading many G35Driver and FreshAlloy Posts there seems to be a tendancy for some to compare the G35 Coupe to the BMW 3-Series Sedans.

Shouldn't sport sedans be compared to sport sedans and sport cars (coupes) be compared to other sports cars?

What am I missing?

There is a 3-series coupe. It's performance is about the same as the 3-series sedan, though, so it's not entirely unfair to compare the G35 coupe to the 330i sedan in this case.

They should be comparing coupe to coupe and sedan to sedan, however.

According to the first review I read about the G35 (that's when I knew I was going to get one!), everybody has been designing to beat the BMW 3's. Infiniti is just the first car company that succeeded.

I along with most compared a lot of cars and was very impressed with the 330 coupe/sedan. a co-worker of mine has a 330ci and after riding in it I was determined to get one. That was until I test drove my G35 6MT Sedan. Not much else to say now. Nothing compares!

Re: G35 Sedan vs BMW 3 Series Sedans

I test drove a 2004 330ci with manual after test driving the G35s (auto and manual) and must say the BMW is a better car overall. I like the new looks of the 2004 more and the clutch is amazingly smooth. But was it $8-10G better? Heck no! Bang for the buck the G35 wins hands down, just as many of the reviews state. I ended up going home with a loaded G35 sedan with a manual and I am very happy with it. Besides, I wasn't ready for the bimmer head dork thing. Know what I mean?

New to this forum and loved your comment about the BMW head dork thing. So many people in our area buy BMWs because of the snooty factor. They really are fine sport sedans and I seriously considered buying one this time around. After test driving the auto 330i, the auto G35 was in my opinion superior(I wanted the auto because of my commute traffic). Add to that the money saved and the reliability factor and after the warranty runs out the savings in maintenance and it was a slam dunk. The 3 series are a dime a dozen in my neighborhood so I have some initial exclusivity plus the G is about the size of the 5 series.
I love my car!!

Let's not get into a BMW-bashing thing. Sure there are people that buy them for the wrong reasons, but there many, many folks who buy them because they can be wonderful cars. If anyone is interested, I'd gladly and honestly tell you how my 6MT compares with my E36 M3!

OK, to be honest, I think beemers have some pretty decent cars and 330 is not as slow as you think. Given a smaller displacement engine but a smoother one and a smoother transmission, it can follow a G35 coupe. I drove all the cars in the competition except for the A4 before buying my car. Let me say that the beemer has a pretty balanced ride in stock form. I am guessing if its not the money factor, some might switch over to a beemer.

Re: G35 Sedan vs BMW 3 Series Sedans

You'd be right. I came really, really close to getting an '03 330i instead of my G35. If it weren't for the fact that I have two kids and need the extra space in the G35's rear seat and trunk, I might have been a bimmer owner. The 5 is out of my reach at the moment. For me myself, I liked the 3. Better auto tranny, rain-sensing wipers, mirrors included in the seat memory, other little things. For the G35, you get reclining rear seats, more space, and you can have the Nav and the in-dash cd player. (For '03, the nav system on a 3 forces a cassette deck, and you have to get a trunk-mounted changer to play CD's at all. Don't know if they've changed that.) Both cars put a big smile on my face. And, now that Caddy has that new 3.6L engine, I'd give them a try again, too. The 3.2L didn't do it for me. Plus, that's another car that's about as big as a 5-series for the price of a 3. If more car makers keep this kind of competition up, maybe we'll be able to get a loaded 330 for under 40k soon.

Re: G35 Sedan vs BMW 3 Series Sedans

ryoken,
That's my opinion too, and even Motor Trend said it was about the same size as the 5-series, a mid-size, but on the window sticker the EPA stuff says "compact", I don't get that on the sticker!

Re: G35 Sedan vs BMW 3 Series Sedans

The price tag matches the COMPACT sticker.
This shows u how big a MIDSIZE will be.
LOL

I don't know if I should compare the cars like this but my friend drives a 330Ci M sport. Maybe its the break in style or sumthing but his car pulls a bit stronger than my car. He redlines his car all the way when he breaks in and I kinda of babied my car. IT pulls so strong........

Re: G35 Sedan vs BMW 3 Series Sedans

There's a guy on Edmund's 5-series board that owns a 530i. He did Euro delivery, and ran the car hard on the autobahn during it's breakin period. His service advisor says the car feels more like a 540i than a 530i.

Who knows? There could be something to that break-in thing. However, I took it easy on mine, as the engine may be fine with a hard break-in, but there are other drivetrain parts that need to settle in before being pushed.
