6MT Shifting Question

I'm new to driving manual, but so far, I love it. I have the regular driving stuff down. The only problem I'm having is when I'm accelerating fast. I'm in first and take it to about 6-7000 RPM. Then, I hit the clutch and shift to second. When I let go of the cluth, the car lunges forward. This only happens going from 1st to 2nd. I'm thinking I'm holding the clutch down too long while I accelerate. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you holding the accelerator down while you are shifting? All I can say is practice, practice, practice! Practice the super fast shift at lower RPM's until you don't have to even think about it and I would bet your upper RPM problem will be solved.

Wait...don't you want the car to lunge forward if you are accelerating fast?

Not sure how to help, but I can tell you I have this problem quite often. Like you, it's only 1st to 2nd. When my friend drives it, even hard, he doesn't have the problem. I've also never had any issue with other manuals including my old manuals. So, it must be me/you paired with the car.

So yeah, it should be something we can overcome. For me it will be tough, I work at home so I put on less than 7,500 a year. Good luck!

I very rarely take it to 7000RPM. So, where should you be at when you are trying to accelerate fast?

Sounds like you might not be shifting fast enough if you're trying to get off the line good, and maybe the revs are dropping too much between shifts. If you're in 1st at 7k, don't let go of the accelerator completely when you shift to 2nd. Try to have the revs hover at around 5k so when you release the clutch, the speed of the engine is playing less catchup (or slowdown)

If you get good at shifting fast and you're trying to kick the **** out of it off the line, you almost don't want to lift the accelerator at all between 1-2. That'll make sure you get pulled into 2nd gear with a little chirp. Don't be afraid of the rev limiter, that's what it's there for

yeah, exactly, your shifts are too slow. You should feel slammed into your seat on the 1-2 shift (not the steering wheel). Search for the clutch pedal adjustment mod and do it. makes for much faster shifts.

Its cool to want to be fast and furious, but unless you know how to shift right I would not be shifting at 7000rpm. Get good at driving around the slow speeds and eventually as you work your way up it will be easier.

I know your question was how do you shift smoother in higher RPMS or for speed, well its the same as lower RPMS but you really need to get a feel for it, this comes with experience.

Good luck

Same there first to second. Its almost makes me feel like I cant drive stick <!!> meanwhile, I have never owned an automatic. The G is a touchy, and not the easiest stick to drive. Definately geared for sport rather than touring..
